D&D 4E Going/Not Going to 4E which edition did you start with?

I started with BECMI (with some of the Moldvay materials) back in the mid-80s (collecting all five of the box sets), kind of moved into 1e when I became interested in Dragonlance (I didn't buy any of the core books, but I had some supplements like the Dragonlance book, DSG, and WSG), and then transitioned into 2e fairly quickly (it was released within a year of my interest in 1e). I stayed for the first couple of years of 2e, but checked out in 1994 after high school. I returned 11 years later to 3.5e in 2005. I'm planning on moving to 4e at this time.

From around 1983 to the beginning of the nineties, I played D&D. I started with the 1E Basic Set, then the Expert Set. Then I jumped to AD&D 2E.

But now, I'm coming back for 4E.

I did try many other games in between: Fantasy Hero, GURPS, Rifts, Shadowrun. I could say it's a return to the source kind of thing.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Warhammer, but it went so fast!

Started with 2E in the early 90s. Played around with most of the versions of that.

I even retrograded back to some 1E and Basic set stuff at various points.

Went to 3E and 3.5 right out of the box.

And plan on doing the same with 4e.

Started with AD&D 1st ed with a lot of supplements from Role Aids and Judges Guild as well as stealing a ton of stuff from Rolemaster and Runequest (hey look, a fumble table!) and of course Dragon mag.

I'll be picking up 4e just to see how it handles various bits but a lot of the flavor changes strike me as being done just to differential it from previous editions while not doing the same thing to many other sacred cows.

I started with AD&D 1e, skipped 2e for Palladium/Rifts/etc...., bought back in for 3e, and don't give a rat's hoo hoo about 4e. I'm gonna play 3.5 or find some other system for the 3 years before 4.5 comes out.

I started back in 1982 with basic D&D, then to 1st Ed AD&D, 2nd Ed AD&D, 3.0 and 3.5. I have loved every improvement that has come with each new edition. Though I had my doubts each time. I my 26 years of D&D, its not the rules that make a game munchkin, or power gaming...its the mentality and attitudes of the DMs and players. They drive the flow of the game more than anything. If your games are out of control or not fun, it’s not the fault of the inanimate books sitting on the table before you, but you yourselves.

So from what I have seen and heard of 4th, I can’t wait to play it. I will just add my 3.5 books to my library of old D&D books dating back to the 70’s. D&D is as good as it has ever been! :)

END

I started with Basic in '81, and I quickly moved to AD&D (overlapping a lot with D&D). I'be played every edition extensively, been gaming ever since to one degree or another.
Every edition has been a step up from the previous. I see no signs that this is going to change now, in fact I expect that 4th edition will be extremely good. I have yet to hear anything significant that I don't like.
I'm expecting that our current 3.5 campaigns will play out, but new campaigns will probably 4th edition... unless it sucks, which would shock me.

RedBox --> AD&D --> 2E --> 3E --> 3.5.

I'll be picking u4 4e. At this point I expect to be playing both 4e and 3.5 simultaneously, as I have a great deal I want to play in 3.5 left (AoW, STAP, RotR, City of Brass, the Dungeon Ebberon Adventures, several other Dungeon adventures).
