D&D 4E Going/Not Going to 4E which edition did you start with?

Last year, the 3.5 campaign I was running for my wife and nephews (D&D newbies) stalled out. The kids just weren't having as much *fun* as we did at their age.

So I dusted off my Moldvay Basic set, cracked open the venerable Keep and The Lost City, and I marvelled at how much fun D&D can be when the rules get out of the damn way.

My nephews moved to Texas in January, and my well-loved Basic & Expert D&D collection went with them---so I guess you can add two more D&D players who got their start with Moldvay's red book . . . in 2007.

This is pretty cool, here.

Started in 82 with Basic Redbox/B2 at age 10. Went on to AD&D within a year or so then added unearthed arcana and dragon magazine.

Played 2e as soon as it came out with just the PHB in hand and continued through highschool. Eventually added in the splats and players options.

Followed the development of 3e on the previous incarnation of this site and played it until the relaese of 3.5.

Currently playing 3.5 with lots of Unearthed Arcana and PHB II thrown in.

Will be DMing 4e for our group as soon as the books arrive, still going some 25 years later.

I started in 1975 with OD&D, went through BECMI, AD&D 1st and 2nd, D&D 3.x, and will try out 4e later this year. If we like the rules then we'll play with them. If we don't then we'll play less D&D and more with other systems. That's what we did with 2nd edition when we decided it wasn't doing what we wanted.

I started in either '75 or '76 with OD&D + supplement 1 Greyhawk (I forget the precise year, it was rather a long time ago!)

Ignored Basic and moved to AD&D when it came out. Ditched D&D before 2e and went for Runequest 2 big-time. Bought the 2e PHB for interest but never used it. Came back to D&D with 3e, used 3.5e when that came out.

Plan to move to 4e. 'cos I love trying out new game mechanics and I'm hoping that it will fix some of the things that annoyed me about 3e in play.

Cheers

I started with Original D&D, the three-books-in-a-box + Greyhawk. I'm optimistic about 4E, but much of my judgement will really come after we see finalized crunchy rules. My basic idea is that pretty much any revision of D&D that de-emphasizes or deletes Vancian casting is a good one and hopefully will bring us closer to the game we should have had in 1985 or there'bouts.

I started with BECMI, quickly graduated to 1st and then 2nd ed AD&D. Took a long break through high school and college, then restarted with 3E in graduate school, followed by AU/AE and 3.5E. I will be (hopefully) DMing 4E, and I definitely want to play 4E as well, though I will likely still be playing a 3.5 game, DMing several Eberron PBP games, and maybe even DMing an AE game concurrently.

I started with the red-box Basic Set (long live Bargle!), and worked my way through the Expert, Companion, and Masters sets. Then I discovered girls, graduated high school and college, got married, and didn't start gaming again until the third edition was released.

I will probably switch to 4E.

Started with Basic (red box -- that thing got around), 1E, ADnD, 2E, 3E, and stopped BEFORE 3.5 (the release of which pissed off my players and, since we already didn't care for a lot of 3E, especially at higher level, didn't seem worth the cost to upgrade to).

We stopped playing DnD when 3.5 came out, though we played, and still play, d20 Modern, which can be a blast. Also played Rolemaster/MERP hybrid (MERP with expanded Rolemaster options) and those two served us well. But we miss DnD. When 4E was announced my players let me know and let me know that they wanted to give it a try since they like what they've heard so far and are much more willing to go for a new edition "clean" than to go for a minor 3.5 or 3.75 upgrade rip-off.

So, going to 4E for sure. Whether we stay with it depends on if it sucks or not.

I started with AD&D 1e in 1984 and I'll probably play 4E eventually (though only after a delay of 1+ years...). So far I mostly like what I see, though I have to admit that my preferences have changed quite a bit over time. I blame my job which simply eats too much time...
