Gold and NPC pay levels

I am one of those nerds that really likes to have a good monetary system. I really liked Gary Gygax's system of equating prices to dollars, so everyone has a real world reference to what value they have.

When I heard that 4e was going to have economics taken care of I almost had a masturbation moment. Then when the rules came out, I was really disappointed. They balanced it against the things characters like to buy. While I can see why (realism vs game balance), it left me where I was at before, wanting to invent an economic system.

But looking through the rules today I realized that you could have NPC pay scales based off "level". An average peasant would make ~1/2 of a first level magic item, or 180gp a year. A really good academic might get pay the equivalent of a 4th level magic item, or 840gp per year. Then the players have a reference to game income levels and bribe amounts, etc.

I am going to have to work through it more, but I am jazzed again.
