Goliath Rock Hurler - Ammo Question

I'm building a Goliath from Races of Stone with a 20 STR. He has the Rock Hurler feat. When he throws a rock (weighing 40 pounds) at an enemy and it hits, is the rock "used up?" Could I pick it up again later?

Are they treated as thrown weapons, or ammunition?

Thrown weapons can be picked up; ammunition is destroyed.
