Good vs Evil: D&D Wargaming

"Citizens of Lowgate, hear me! I have returned from battle with the forces of darkness. I have single handedly defeated two of their generals, along with an entire army! The vile creatures that threaten your home and family seek vengence and will be much more prepared in the future. They will come to destroy everything you know and I cannot fight them alone. Thus, I call upon the great people of Lowgate. My brother and I have..."

You trail off in your speech at this moment, transforming from charismatic leader to speechless man within the space of two words. The croud begins to mumble, and look around. And then the screaming starts.

To the east, in front of the rising sun, is a dragon, rising up out of the city from beneath the ground. It is transparant, but its eyes glow murderously. It roars, a piercing shriek that echoes across the city. And then, after letting all admire it for just that moment, it descends into the city again to devour. Dead though it may be, the Dragon has come back for vengence, and it is slaughtering your people.

"I know what to do," says the Archon watching Lowgate (one of two, for added security at the already endangered city). Seeing the catastrophe unfold, the archon present at Lowgate teleports to the Skylance to sound alarum. "Lowgate is under attack by a ghostly dragon!" In one instant, This archon appears on the Skylance, and in the next half a dozen waiting archons fly out of the Forbidding zone and teleport to various cities that need to be alerted.

Growling furiously in anger, Axorius unfurls and stretches his newly made and magnificent feathered wings, and in a flash of light, he is gone [teleported to Lowgate as soon as his initiative comes up, and using his move action to fly 150' towards the dragon]. Upon seeing it (Axorius also has See Invisibility always on, if it matters), Knowledge (Religion) +17 roll as a free action to identify what it is?

Zan shouts, "Citizens, retreat to the cavern! Soldiers, enter formation and attack!"

How far away is the ghost? Dan and Zan can reach about 2080 feet with long range spells. My entire army will run as fast as they can towards the ghost, with the archers stopping within 100 ft of it.

The square where you delivered your speech is set right into the mountain wall, whereas the dragon appeared much further away, deliberately positioning himself out of your range. He has then descended into the residential areas, where you would be reluctant to use area of effect spells... and not EVERYONE came to hear your speech (They'd all hear of it eventually, but not everyone personally came). Esspecially the women, and the children, and the elderly and sick.

Your city is large. The dragon is a fair three quarters of a mile away from you (3,960 feet) and yet still within the heart of the city.

Axorius, your knowledge alerts you to two things: One, any dragon who has it's hoard stolen finds it difficult to proceed to the afterlife, and has a fair chance of remaining as a ghost. Two, the dragon slain was a personal general of the Lich King, who surely has a vested interest in matters. That would explain the speed in which the dragon materialized.

You can expect that the ghostly dragon is able to drain the life away of nearly anyone he touches, and that only the very strongest of men would have the strength to survive another day... and even they would not be fighting for a while. It has a breath weapon that can suck out life from a distance. And of course, it has a ghostly form of everything it used to have...

(telepathically, to Dan and Zan) "I suspect this is the dragon you killed, and it's looking for its hoard. If we don't take permanent measures, it will likely rejuvenate after we destroy it. I believe I can stop it if I discharge all of my positive energy at once. Can you make a distraction, and perhaps give me some form of invisibility? I can teleport above it and deliver the touch by surprise."

“Mistress! A Dragon over Lowgate!” Velsin, came running into her office.

Ashalla nodded, “Gather the others at the circle, I will go take a look.”

Ashalla rose from her desk and made her way down the stairs, By Theren, I hope it isn’t a big one, if it is, I am not sure we will be able to stop it. she thinks to herself as she arrives in the mirror room.

She can see the defenders scrambling as she looks down on the defenders, she looks down to the city and she can see the beast. It isn’t solid. A ghost? Of a Dragon? Ethereal perhaps.

She watches the events unfold, It is staying out of range, it isn’t looking for a fight. But it should know they can teleport as can the archons. A distraction? Trying to lure the defenders out, or keep them occupied. Still, unless it has an extraordinary escape route, it is commit virtual suicide, unless it is a ghost, in which cast it may be linked to it’s horde, or an illusion. Or it could be extraordinarily overconfident.

She whistles and the Wren who is always on watch comes to her, “I need for you to check the keep, make sure there is nothing going on there. If everything is safe return here, if it isn’t warn Dan and Zan, and whoever else you come across on the way. Be careful little one.”

The Theren’s Wren looks at her and in it’s little sing-song voice, “Yes, Headmistress, I shall.”

She speaks the command word and the mirror becomes a portal and the wren flies through, circling down toward the keep. She speaks another word and the mirror returns to just a normal scrying device.

"Yes, I can make you invisable. The only thing I can do is provide a distraction, so I'm counting on you."

Dan and Zan cast fly on themselves, moving up and towards the dragon, trying to get it's attention.

Hoping that his plan is a sound one, Axorius channels all of the healing positive energy that he can, knowing that it is anathema to abominable undead. [ooc: Lay on Hands for 117 points and hold the charge]. He then teleports above the dragon 450' (or to the roof of the cavern, if it isn't that open. On the following round, Axorius will charge straight downward at the dragon (doubled in speed for moving downward) and unleash the touch attack.

Zedrihar tells the archon, "I will begin preparations for a counter-attack - I doubt that you will need my help to dispatch a single undead. If things go badly, I will gate in, but I can only do this once per day and would rather save the ability for now. Keep me and my subcommanders informed." He gestures to the zelekhut and kolyarut at his sides.

Having said this, Zedrihar begins to leapfrog-teleport northward across the desert, using dimension door to move 960 feet, then running 30 feet, using dimension door again, etc., with a movement of 990 feet per round, or 113 miles per hour. He invokes true seeing before doing so and continues to keep it maintained during travel. Zedrihar will travel across the desert, then into Evil territory, and begin a spiral motion, searching for enemy forces. If he encounters anything unusual or dangerous, he stops leapfrogging and tries to stay out of sight if possible while he considers what next to do. Zedrihar will do this long enough to cross the desert, and then spend no more than four hours in the Evil lands before contacting the other generals to ponder his next move.
