Got Scythe?

Is there any reason that every character wouldn't carry a scythe? You don't have to be proficient or anything, just carry it around. Wait for that instance (every now and then) when you coup de grace, then whip it out. CDG is an auto-hit, auto-crit. It matters not at all that you aren't proficient, you still get a x4 critical. I guess you would probably need the Quickdraw feat if you want to save time, but that's about it.

Am I totally wrong about this?

You want to carry around a large weapon just to CDG? I think that would be difficult. Scythes are unweldy items. Ever use one? Not the type of thing I'd be carrying on my belt for a few CDG. And you would need the Quick Draw feat to do it the same round you drew your weapon. Personally, I'd do this witha pick instead. Easier to carry and has a better second function. For some reason my characters find themselves needed to dig far more then sew wheat.

On a wierd side not, anyone find it wierd when an abriviation is the same as you intials. CDG, Chris David Gath. Maybe it's just me and the lateness of the hour......

Your arch-nemesis stands before you, reeling from your party's attack. You approach him and prepare to send his soul to the Nine Hells. A booming voice shatters the silence.

Finish him!

You could get quite the reputation with a "finisher" like that ;)

There must be a reason, because I have yet to see a PC in my campaign carry this weapon.

Lugging a large weapon around can already be annoying, but if it's not your primary weapon it becomes sheer idiocy to do so. You can imagine a barbarian carrying a great axe and a scythe? It's Silly.

If you want a CDG specific weapon, use a light pick. It's less cumbersome.

But why go to all this trouble when most fighters are able to deliver a nearly unstopable CDG with a common long sword?

If we were playing Baldur's Gate, which is a game where gems are as unwieldy as suits of plate mail and you can only carry about two dozen gemstones at a time, there would be nothing wrong with it.

I'd use a heavy pick rather than a light one; the difference between 4d4 and 4d6 might not be that big, but it's there.

Perhaps it would easier to alway carry a blind kobold rogue around. (A weapon`s size category is "translated" in creauture size two categories smaller, so the scythe would be as big as the kobold). The blindness must come from the spell Blindness/Deafness so the wizard could turn it off for the coup de grace. :)
The blind kobold would probably much more useful in most other situations, especially with unerrated feats. :)

I've seen a wizard carry around a Great Axe for killing sleeping opponents.

Well, we were actually on boat, so encumberence wasn't that big of a deal.

I have a priest of Nurell in a game, who wields a scythe quite well.

I've figured the best process is to get yourself a glove of holding. Pop it out when need be, do the nastiness, then slip it back in.

That's the worst euphemism for masturbation I've ever seen.
