I was kind of wondering, how do you develop the rules part of such a D20 publication if the rules are not yet public? Although you work on Modern D20, is it already known what rules (if any) will be OGL? If not, what to base them on then?
The d20 Modern rule sections will be added to the System Reference Document soon. How are they developing the product? Just as long as the UMF material have not been distributed to the public, they are safe until the SRD have been updated.
So basically they have time to write, rewrite, edite, more rewrite before they send it to the printers.
Yes, they can rewrite when the d20 Modern is added to the SRD, but that's what concerns me. How long ago was D20/OGL launched? Years? The SRD is still not completed, there's only a gentleman's agrement for the 'unofficial' material. To expect to see the SRD updated with d20 Modern material on the short term might be a bit of wishful thinking...
WotC has a strong interest in seeing substantial third party support for d20 Modern right out the gate. They're even sponsoring a special issue of the Gaming Herald to help promote not only d20 Modern, but third party products in support of d20 Modern. WotC has been very friendly to d20 publishers in helping them get going with this, going so far as to give us drafts of the d20 Modern rules.
My guess is that we'll see an SRD update to include the d20 Modern rules at about the same time d20 Modern hits retail.
