Grapple Opportunities

As listed by SRD; the rules state that "You automatically lose an attempt to hold if the target is two or more size categories larger than you are." Since most characters are Medium, that means that no matter how excellent they are at grappling, the largest foe they could grapple would be a Large creature. Would it be broken to create a feat that would allow for a larger range of sizes that could be grappled? And if so, to what would you change the maximum size? Tanks!

I don't think it would come up often enough for it to be broken. Feat or no, if you want to go up against a Huge creature with a +8 grapple bonus and high strength, be my guest.

I don't see any actual issues with removing the offensive grapple limit. Big creatures still have their size bonuses, strength scores and (usually) good BAB to keep them from ending up in a human's headlock.

If you can somehow manage to outgrapple a Colossal Great Wyrm Red Dragon then I'm not going to say you can't.
"How could he possibly choke a Colossal Dragon?"
"I don't know, but obviously he does since he just did it."

Now, if you were wanting to remove the size bonuses, so that folks could actually try to escape from a kraken's tentacle, then I'd see some issues. A third level halfling warrior should not be able to outgrapple an ogre. Under the current rules he a) automatically fails and b) couldn't win anyway. Without size bonuses and without the offensive size limit, it becomes at least theoretically possible, and "That just ain't right."

Removing the size restrictions altogether would be even better! But I'd definitely agree that the size bonus/penalty should still be used. I ask because I made a Fighter totally geared towards grappling but somehow overlooked the size limit clause. Which made a pretty ineffective melee fighter that much more ineffective because he wouldn't be able to use his primary method of attacking against any huge or larger foes. It made a unique (but much less effective) character become even less effective than I first thought.

Thanks for the inputs!

Potions of Enlarge Self could come in very handy. Not only would the increased size let you grapple more creatures, it would also give you a size bonus to your grapple checks.

That's definitely a good tactic but it still would top me out at being able to grapple Huge foes. If there is a way to homerule being able to grapple anyone, that's the ideal!

I could also have a Wu Jen make a Ring of Giant Size for me! That'd take care of it all too!

i know of one home made dragon slayer prestige class that had some stuff on grappleing huge + creatures. as i recall it came out more along the lines as you just grab and hang on, while geting some shots in with your weapon ( ya any weapon too) i liked it because it recreated the classic heroics where the hero ends up holding on for dear life on some big monster.
