grappling actions

how many grapple actions do you permit in a round? for instance if the fighter has 3 attacks in a full attack round can he initiate a grapple, then a hold and a pin all in the same round? If these are all to be separate attack rounds then it implies a take down attack takes 18 seconds...something i disagree with as even greco roman wrestling has much quicker methods for putting someone on the ground. suggestions anyone?

The above combination is fine. All three of those substitute for an attack, so with threea ttacks, you can manage all three.

Certain other grappling actions are a standard action in their own right, in which case they can't be part of the full attack action.

Read the Grappling section in the PHB - it tells you which are which.

-Hyp.

Grapple checks are based on your BAB and iterative attacks. If your fighter's BAB is +11, he could make 3 grapple checks per round, at a base of +11, +6, and +1.

Hyp is correct (so what ELSE is new? :D): Only SOME grapple actions take the place of an attack and can be used iteratively using the Full Attack Action while Grappling.

NOT All: Drawing a Weapon in a grapple takes a Move Action (which would prohibit making more than one attack in that round). Escape from Grapple using Escape Artist requires a Standard Action; as does attempting to cast a Spell, Activate a Magic Item, or Move. Retrieving a Spell Component requires a Full Round Action.

Pinning or being Pinned creates additional complications, as does adding a third (or more) grapplers to the mix. This is one section of the rules where it PAYS to have the book open while trying to resolve.... ;)
