Grappling

Alright.. I have two questions about grappling..

first, what kind of action is it to start a grapple? An attack? IF so can you make multiple grapple attempts if the one fails? IE try to grapple, fail, try again.

Second, if you have multiple grapplers (A, B, and C) how does the following situation play out?

A has B grappled. C grapples A and pins A. Is B then released? what happens if not?

Thanks

yes. You can try to initiate a grapple as many times as your BAB allows you to attack.

Going strictly by the rules, I believe B is not released and needs to make a successful grapple check or Escape Artist check to escape.

PHB 3.5 "If you get multiple attacks, you can attempt to start a grapple multiple times"

To clarify the question I would start it with-If A and B are grappling-since a grapple is not one sided. Secondly, are there three individuals grappling each other or two individuals grappling one? In the given scenario I would guess that A is opposing both B and C. If this is the case C must join the grapple (no AoO, and automatic grab followed by a successful grapple check vs. A) and then attempt a pin next attack. Once the pin is established A is immobile (limited to pinned actions), C is pinning A (limited to pinning actions) and B is no longer grappling since C cannot maintian a grapple while pinned. You may rule that B is still grappling but can voluntarily release A as a free action.
