GTAIV: Most Over-Hyped Game Ever? Maybe.

I generally try not to buy into the hype for any media. I bought Halo 3, enjoyed the campaign, and shelved it. I am enjoying the GTA4 campaign and am about 15% in. I know I will get my money's worth, even if I never play it again.

It's a game. On a time/dollars ratio, video games are one of the best values, at least for me.

I do have to say the comedy and satire I've seen and heard thus far in the game has been almost more fun than the game itself. Rockstar have a pretty sharp edge when it comes to critiquing contemporary society.

Generally though, I think a big difference between San Andreas and GTAIV is while one simply explores tons of different things, it isn't very focused.

GTAIV is a much more focused game, you have a interesting main character, well developed plotlines and characters a more focused fighting system and a more believable city. That is what GTAIV is about, it is in a way more of a serious story-oriented game then the previous ones.

Good point well worth mentioning. Niko is a great character, and I feel as much empathy for him as I have any fictional character I've ever encountered. I hope there's some way to re-watch cut-scenes, because some of the stuff that he says is really classic.

A good story and characterization can really improve a game and be one of its big selling points to me. If the gameplay isn't awkward, I might even prefer such a game over one that has a better interface or more innovative features ;)

Oblivion is actually the 2nd smallest game in the series (behind Morrowind). Arena and Daggerfall were much, much, much, much bigger (they used procedural generation to make most of the maps)

Its amazing, though, how Morrowind managed to fit so much STUFF in the 'empty' space.

Not to say I don't like Oblivion, but it does feel so much more empty and a bit boring compared to that...and yet its smaller at the same time.

It was probably also a different kind of hype I had in mind - despite everyone praising the graphics, it wasn't as succesful as the publisher wished for. At least not in the beginning. My information might be out-dated.

I think today's emphasis on multiplayer functionality really hurts many games. It becomes such a resource-sink that the single-player experience seems noticably short-changed. GTAIV is one of the recent casualties IMO.
