Gurps project: Magic

DungeonMaester

First Post
For a fresh start for gurps, I would like to create a new idea for the way magic is done. My idea is that all spells can be completely customized by the players, creating spells much like picking advantages. Basically, everything you could want in spell which can be bought. this is sort if what I have in mind, feel free to add on the the idea, or rip it apart and make your own.

What I hope to accomplish is a one page magic builder template.

Here what I came up with:

1. Effect Area
-Single Target (5)
-Mass (5 for every 1 target)
-Area effect (10 for every 1 area)

2. Effect
-Compulsion
-Damage
-Divine
-Illusion

3.
-Compulsion effects
-Damage types
-healing effects
-false sense

Ok, not much, but it is one am in the morning and I can't think well. I hope I got my point across though

At first glance, it would seem to me that what you want is to just craft each spell with GURPS Powers, and then tack on the appropriate 'spell' modifiers (costs fatigue, etc.).

You'd have to deal with the fact that creating many GURPS spells (such as Create Animal or Force Dome or Explosive Fireball) with GURPS Powers would be vastly more expensive, but that could be seen as a plus to those who think that the skill-based default magic system is too cheap anyway...

Question for you - are you looking for your players to buy spells at a set configuration and not be able to modify them on the fly? I assume yes - but it's worthwhile to check.

Also - are you covering a times per day here? One of the reasons that building these using GURPS Powers would be so expensive is because it's essentially 'at will' - so you can easily reduce the price with limitations of times per day or fatigue costs. How many times per day could someone cast this spell by default? Once? Thrice? At will (and hence very costly)?

Oh! And don't forget protection and transformation effects in your list of things a spell can do.

Rusty, let me once again say that if you are not reading the forums at sjgames.com then you are doing yourself a disservice. The folks there are well versed in GURPS and can possibly help you avoid the "reinventing the wheel" syndrome that most people have when they come to a new game system.

Oh, while I am at it, I believe what you want to do is already available in GURPS. You will want to check out the Magic book. It has what you are looking for, if I am not mistaken.
