GURPS vs. Harp

GURPS Lite is your friend here. Complete rules in 32 pages. Sure, if you want to play a mage or a nonhuman you will have to use the Basic Set, but apart from that...
.

Out of curiousity, would it be possible to get by with a copy of GURPS Lite and the 4e Fantasy book?

I once got a t pc up to a skill of 18 in fencing and bwaa haaa haaa, dead heavies left and right. combat penalties of -6 to -10 aren't that big a deal when your skill is high and stabbing people in the eye prooved to be a really useful tactic because of the nature of damage using the advanced combat rules in GURPS.
Heh, same here. :) And if you're facing that's too big for you to easily target the eye, wait for the burly fighter to get through DR with his axe.., "Hmm, that wound is about the size of an eyeslit, right?" :D

Also, please note that I will be there and running a game as well.

At the last DC Game day, the HARP table was the loudest in the room (the players were having that much fun). And I promise, no Giant Ants this time..... :D

I can vouch for that. I haven't had so much gaming in quite some time!

I'm hoping to get in on some more HARP action this next time round. I think everyone has already covered the basics. We had a table of newbs and combat was not a long and tedious affair; it's pretty easy to do the math and see where you end up on the table...and the results can be half the fun. :]

Although, I admit, I kinda like die_kluge's /2 idea, as well.

I am in the process of doing an alternate combat system for HARP (to be released soon in pdf). I may end up using that for the game I run. Or perhaps using a lighter variant for combat this time around (have not decided yet). Last game I was introducing HARP, this time I want to show off some of its flexibility. Plus show off the setting we have coming out soon (will have to print out color versions of the maps (they are gorgeous!!!)

I agree about the spells, DnD does have too many that are merely powered up versions of lower level spells, or an energy subtype exchange. On the plus side DnD has cool "flavor" for spells and cinematic effects i might never have thought of. I think a little GameDay HARP might just be the cure for DnD disease...

If I implement that mechanic, I may go with (OB-DB)/4 since that would be a closer approximation to the criticals tables.

I also may implement some kind of stun rule like # of stuns equals damage / 10. So, if you take 50 damage, you're stunned for 5 rounds.

I also think "stun" is a bad word. Conjures up images of being paralyzed. Should be called "dazed", I think.

GURPS Magic 4e would probably the better purchase, since there are no spells in GURPS Fantasy, and the alternate magic systems all refer to the Basic Set a lot.

You'd need to come up with some fantasy races to go with GURPS Lite, but these are quite easy to do, as long as you don't want to use some rather unusual abilities. If in doubt, just ask on the Steve Jackson Games forums for help.

I'm going to start a fantasy campaign using GURPS Lite soon (three of the four players are complete RPG newbies), and initially I am only going to use GURPS Magic for the mage character - I won't be needing GURPS Basic Set at all. Granted, once the players are comfortable with the system I'll introduce more options from the Basic Set, but not because I really need them...

Stun to me conjures DnD stun, which can be more or less a death sentence. A while back one guy in my group came up with a modular d20 character creation system based on Mutants and Masterminds. You could create any character by point expenditure, including "buying" the Toughness feat to up hitpoints, and buying BAB and Saves and Spell Points. We didn't get to playtest it enough, but HARP looks a heckuva lot more well-rounded and playable.
