Ok, I will try again. Here are the parameters for Gwyndilyn:

She is a sneaky thief. Her first resort is to attack by surprise, at range.
Her second resort is ranged combat.
Her default resort if the enemy is closing is to run.
Her last resort is to fight hand to hand. But I wish to create her to have the capacity to strike hard and fast, hopefully killing her opponent before he has a chance to kill her.

Gwyndilyn eschews heavy or medium armor. Because ...
Armor is anaethema to silent movement, fleet and fast movement, and hiding.
Armor is anaethema to quickly running away.
Armor cancels out dexterity bonuses anyways.

Gwyndilyn leaves armor to the tanks. And hopes she does not get hit (and really hope Mr. Ogre out there doesn't come in for a bear hug.)

Sounds like a Ranger/Rogue would work. I'm a fan of Rangers, so, you know, a straight Rogue might be better. There are a few things that two levels of Ranger gets you above 2 levels of Rogue:

Track, Wild Empathy +2, 1 Favoured Enemy at +2 (humans is always a good choice), Rapid Shot.
+2 Fort save.
+2 hp.
+1 BAB.
The ability to use wands with spells from the Ranger list. This includes Cure Light Wounds and Longstrider, and some good ones from the Complete books.

You can keep all your sneak and perception skills maxed out. Against your favoured enemy, you'll be a better scout than a straight-up Rogue. And since you're going the ranged combat route, Sneak Attack isn't as good as if you were TWF.

You lose some Sneak Attack progression and some skill points. You should still have enough skill points to cover all your bases, though.

Either way, your stats should be the same. This is what I would do (32 point-buy):

Str 12
Dex 16
Con 16 (this is high so you can survive those times when you do get stuck in melee)
Int 12
Wis 12
Cha 8

Feats:
1 - Point-Blank Shot.
2 - Track (bonus).
3 - Precise Shot, Rapid Shot (bonus). No-brainer for a ranged type.
6 - Improved Init.
9 - Manyshot.

For melee, carry a Greatsword or a Longsword. A Greatsword is better, but you can switch to the Longsword without dropping your bow.

Upgrade your armour to a mithral chain shirt ASAP. Good protection, no armour check penalty, and it's cheap. If you don't mind a minor (-1) armour check penalty, get a mithral breastplate when you can afford it. The bonus to your AC is worth the trade-off.

Notes Gwyndilyn designated rogue as her favored class, so is not penalized on experience. She must now advance as either a rogue or a barbarian, or choose a fourth class, or enter a prestige class, to avoid experience point penalties.

Now I know why everyone thinks the people on the rules forum are so extremely fervent about getting the rules exactly right.
They HAVE to be. *I* have to be. Nothing short of that will do, with this level of arithemetical complexity.

I hope I got it right ...

Just read your article.
I can try reconfiguring Gwyndilyn's advance as:

Rogue 1 (1st character level)
Ranger 1 (2nd)
Ranger 2 (3rd)

Rangers CERTAINLY get more skill points that Warriors, and their skills are more identical to the Rogue (they stack with the Rogue's, whereas the Warrior's does not.)
Rangers do get the Combat Style at 2nd level, and can gain Two-Weapon Proficiency or Rapid Shot as they choose (Gwyndilyn would, naturally, take Rapid Shot.)
And the use of magical items is extremely important.
I also agree about humans being a good Favored Enemy.

Thus:

1st level Feats: blind-fight, combat reflexes, point blank shot, improved initiative
- Class feats: light armor proficiency, shield proficiency, light weapon proficiency, martial weapon proficiency
- Drawbacks: frail, meager fortitude

2nd level: gains no feats, but special qualities of favored enemy (human), track (as the feat), wild empathy

3rd level: gains the hear the unseen feat, and special qualities of combat style - rapid shot (as the feat)

4th level: gains 2nd rogue level, gains 15 dexterity (from 14 dexterity)

5th level: gains 1st fighter level, gains the quick draw feat

6th level: gains 2nd fighter level, gains the precise shot feat and the arterial strike feat


Interesting point: Taking fighter levels increases your feat advancement at low levels, but then becomes useless.
In the above example, I designate rogue as Gwyndilyn's favorite class. That class is exempted. Now, in order to gain fighter feats, I must take a level in ranger as well. So fighter feats come only once per four levels (assuming I continue to triple-multiclass.)
Regular feats (9th, 12th, 15th, 18th) occur normally.

It is likely Gwyndilyn would return to advancement solely as a rogue after 6th level.
If she could obtain a Prestige Class that would better her lot, she'd most certainly take it. She can still take 1 level in wizard without penalty, if she desires a spell-casting PrC.

A good break-point for multi-classing in to Fighter is 2nd (for the 2 Feats) or 4th (for the 3rd Feat + Weapon Specialization). This is usually enough to allow you focus on a particular fighting style.

Have you thought about Rogue2/Ranger2/Fighter2? You'd have BAB +5, track and rapid shot, two bonus feats, sneak attack +1d6, evasion, trapfinding, 1 favoured enemy, good Fort/Ref saves (base +6/+6), slightly less than d8 hp (1hp less than a Cleric of the same level), and a really crappy Will save (base +0, your main weakness). After that, you can progress as a Rogue. This assumes that you don't use multiclass penalties, or that Rogue is your Favoured Class.

Other than the will save, the challenge for such a character will be dealing damage in the level 4-8 range. With a 12 strength and only +1d6 sneak attack, the character will be dealing 8-10 damage per hit where ordinary fighters are dealing 10-15 damage per hit and single class rogues are dealing 15-20 damage per hit. Eventually, the sneak attack will catch back up, but you pay a very high price for those feats.

Instead of making Gwyndilyn a rogue with some fighter skills, I'm going to make her a fighter with some rogue skills. Let's see if that will work.

At 5th level, I'm giving her Elven Chain. I'm not certain if she would qualify for it at that level, but certainly everyone and their brother wanted such armor once upon a time.
