D&D 5E GWFing and Smite?

Xeviat

Hey everyone, should be a quick question: Does GWFing's "reroll 1s and 2s" apply to all damage on an attack? Weapon damage, smite damage, improved divine smite damage, smite spell damage? Or does it just apply to the weapon damage?

Thanks

Crawford > Mearls where rules questions are concerned.

In my opinion, this one falls squarely in the "RAF" department as the smite-nova builds are already plenty powerful without getting re-rolls on the smite damage too. Seems inconsistent that crits double smite dice and sneak attack dice too, but I'm okay with those as crits are a lot less frequent than an ability which applies on every damage roll the player is going to make with a given weapon type.

As written, the wording means that GWF style re-rolls apply to every die of damage done by that attack, not just the weapon damage dice.

JC might not have intended this, but it is how it is worded and it is a better rule than the one intended. Without GWF working with all damage dice from the attack, GWF is a blatantly poor style, given that Duelling adds a flat +2.
