Gygax doesn't matter?

It's a tad tasteless. Some of the people who have commented on Gary's death on the net knew him personally, or at least met him a few times. Outside of those people, he was still a sort of celebrity in the gaming subculture. People mourn actors and other celebrities they've never known who die all the time, are they losers too for doing so?

It comes off a bit as "D&D is for losers, people who play it are losers, and they're proving they're losers by being sad over this". I'm not going to get worked up over it because I don't know who this guy is, I don't care, and once this thread dies, I'll completely forget about him.

His games have progressed from "Games I Didn't Know About, And So Wouldn't Have Bought" to "Games Made By Someone I'd Rather Not Give Money To".

So, does this article make it a "Win" for him?

Wow. Seeing that quote I immediately thought... "Oh look, another typical insecure :):):):):):):) who seems to need to make others feel bad in order to feel better about himself." After debating for several minutes whether or not I should even bother clicking the link I finally decided to and reading through the first few paragraphs, I stopped, feeling totally vindicated. Maybe the ending somehow redeems him, but I can't be bothered to read on.

Well, I skimmed the rest of it and... Well at least he apparently doesn't think that anyone who would even consider playing a role-playing game is somehow sub-human. :\ He does seem to have a superiority/inferiority complex.

I didn't know him personally, and even if I did it wouldn't really matter, since death doesn't bother me at all whether it happens to friends or family or strangers. Everyone dies and since getting excited about it won't change anything, I don't

Shilsen, I need to clarify what you're saying above. Are you saying that if, say, you had a 2 year old daughter and she was hit by a car and died, it wouldn't bother you? If, say, your wife was stricken by cancer and died long before her time leaving you a widower, it wouldn't bother you?

I don't want to start some kind of flame war with you since I've always pretty much enjoyed what you have to say, but unless you're some kind of robot, I find it hard to believe that you actually really feel that way. And if you do, I feel very sorry for you.

You know, if this were most other forums on the internet I'd think you were lying about not wanting to start a flame war. Mainly because most internet forums are populated exclusively by people who can't tell the difference between criticism, neutral observations, and personal insults.

In other words, yay for EN World!

Thanks for the thoughts guys, I'm not afraid of admitting I felt a bit foolish there for a second, but there is no cause to. You do not need to be physically led by the hand by someone to feel he has had an impact on you.

Garrys This is for you

I as a old school Dungeon master from box on up to 3.5 (don't get me started on 4th ) have a great respect for the father of D&D. With that said I believe he would have wanted this on this tomb stone "Oop rolled a 1"

Garry we will miss you have fun with the great game in the sky.

Heh. Someone linked to this on rpg.net, and the thread was closed by post 5 as troll. The moderators's comment:

"Also, that guy took an amazing number of words to say that he's too cool to care about current events."

I tend to agree with this. It's a sign of insecurity.

Trust me, I'm not. I've really enjoyed a lot of what Shilsen posts, especially with regards to Planescape stuff. I just find it hard to believe that anyone feels that way and want to know if that REALLY IS what he's saying. If it is, and he doesn't like my tone, I'll back off and apologize if I've offended him. Of course, Shilsen can completely ignore me and that'll be that. ;)

Oh, and I totally agree with what your saying. For the most part, EN World has some pretty decent and sincere people that make up its forum community. Of course, I've seen lots of Trolls here as well, but hey, they manage to creep in every where.
