Had Creamed Chipped Beef for the first time today...

I had creamed chipped beef, or as my dad calls it, S**t on a Shigle, due to his being in the Air Force, for the first time today. I don't get it, if it referred to as S.O.S., how come it doesn';t taste like such. I swear this stuff is so good just thinking about the taste makes me salivate. Mmm, mm good.

Well, I'm off to have dinner. I'll be back in 40 minutes or so....

I'm guessing the military version was not as, shall we say, tasty. :) And especially in the field, perhaps as a packaged MRE -- what the heck is that "toast" gonna be like coming out of a vacuum sealed bag?

Hmm. Well if it is in brown gravy, they probably call creamed chipped beef SOS because of the way it looks. :) I don't think I have to get technical here.

And if it was served on a regular basis a MRE, you'd get pretty tired of it real soon. Especially if that MRE stuff is anything like the old school lunches. IE: barely edible at best.

well usually by the time we got it in the field it was cold so it thickened up, and tasted horrible, since it was cooked by the military cooks. we callled it SOS or Creamed Crap. Once of the fine delicacies of military food.

My dad was in the army in WW2, and used to cook it all the time at home when I was younger - probably helps explain the early weight gain and formerly high blood pressure. :) Only he used plain hamburger meat in the gravy. Still awesomely delicious.

born in the military.

my grandfather was a cook in the Navy during WW I.

it is amazing what you can do with the stuff. :uhoh:
