Half-Minotaur Medusa?

I'm putting together a NPC to run with a small group of characters in an Eberron adventure. The character is a girl, a young teen, about 15, an orphan for all her live on the dark dirty lower streets of Sharn. She is the daughter of a pair of Droaamish mercenaries who came through Sharn long ago. Her mother, a medusa, never left Sharn for she died giving birth. Her father, a minotaur, was deeply in love and loved with her mother but was not there at the time of birth being away on the front. Elissa doesn't know if he even knew about her being concieved, but she's never really thought about it as he never returned from the front and she presumes he died there never knowing of the death of his wife and birth of his daughter.

Elissa is CG and reveres the Sovereign Host.

The difficulty is that she takes much more after her mother than her father. I'm using Medusa character levels out of Savage Species in conjunction with the Half-Minotaur template out of Dragon #313 to create Elissa. The difficulty I'm having is that the template (A) totally changes her head, which is problematic for a Medusa, and (B) increases her size - and I was thinking of making her smallish - about 5'4", slight build. Visually I imagine her having a bit of hair which grows out between the scales of her head in an attractive, though a bit unsettling manner - hair and scales just don't go well together. She also has a pair of small horns poking through her snakes and a slight Minotaurish type snout though scaled with hairs as mentioned above. So a bit of it shows, but she's mostly Medusa. So she's still medium, instead of large, and she only can't really gore effectively at all - her snakes get in the way, she lacks the Minotaur strength, but also their Intelligence penalty. So after all these changes to the template what's left? She has her father's Minotaur Cunning (bonus vs. maze spells and inerring intenal compass, i.e. always knows which way is north), +2 Natural Armor, the Scent ability, +2 to Con, +2 bonuses to Search, Spot, and Listen, and Track as a bonus feat. The unaltered template is LA +1. I was still planning on using it as LA +1.

Does this sound reasonable? Or am I just way out in left field? I always wanted to play a character like this, but it wasn't until Eberron came out that it actually began to make sense as a character concept.

Hey man,

well, to tell you the truth, it is an interesting character concept (good back story and all) but i dunno, it doesnt do much for me. Its kinda "meh". Personally, i wouldnt make a character like that for playing. As a foe, yes, if i were to play in Ebberron, but i DM FRCS and my own campaign, so I havent really bothered with Ebb yet.
As for mechanics, I havent really gone through all that you stated, but it does sound solid from that POV. I'll come back to this if i can, and give some more feedback, but its 1 in the morning, and i have to be in school for nine, so its sleeptime for me :D:D. Damn, i gotta quit doing that :P. Peace man.

Perhaps make her scaley like a medusa but give her a minotaur's head making her look somewhat like a gorgon (as per the MM) but not metallic.

If I remember right, horn is made of the same stuff that fingernails and hair is made of. You could get really wierd and have the snakes come out of her head where her horns should be. Or perhaps give her the horns and snakes, and drop the fur on her head anyways.

Maybe she's furry from her navel down to her toes, and above her navel the minotaur gives way to the medusa and the fur is replaced by scales. Kind of a tauric approach to the whole deal.

I think it would work best if you give her a gorgonesque head (Scaley bovine) with snakes and then scales to her navel and then fur and bovine legs like a minotaur.

As for size, make her smaller, it fits the story and doesnt really make or break the template for your purposes. I'd say the LA would still stay as +1 since she gets useful abilities.

Thanks for the reply!

I think I agree. I think I'll go with the furry and hooved lower half, almost satyrish, but more muscular and bulky like a bull gradually transitioning to a lithe, scaly, reptilian form between her lower hips and navel with a scaly head, bovine, but attractively feminine even so, all scaly with snaky hair and small horns just showing throughthe snakes. She sounds like she'll be very unique. I had thought of having her disguised as a human girl of her age initially, but I'm going to have to scrap that section of it though - she's just too unique and noticeable to pull that off.

My friend Acquana ran a half-human half-Minotaur in one of my games:

And I thought that character concept was strange. Yours takes the cake.

+1 Level Adjust for Minotaur Cunning, +2 Natural Armor, the Scent ability, +2 to Con, +2 bonuses to Search, Spot, and Listen, and Track as a bonus feat? Sounds fine to me, though even if you're only half-Minotaur I'd think you'd get a Strength bonus before you got a Con bonus. I think you could almost make a 'base race' minotaur that gets +1 natural armor, always know North, and gets Track as a bonus feat, with no level adjust.

Cool drawing!! I'm going to give that to an artist friend of mine and see if he can come up with a concept sketch - if he does I'll post it! So you think I should swap out the constitution bonus for the strength bonus? I thought about that, but I was worried about it being too unbalancing what with leaving the intelligence penalty out - I know Strength is widely considered to be the most potent ability.

Once she's done with racial levels I plan on making her a sorceress or magic user of some sort, not that it really matters.

It's going to be difficult to be an effective spell caster with that much LA. But not impossible if you focus more on buffing/utility spells rather than on atttack spells.

I just had a thought about maybe going a Warlock route with her casting - thought the at will part of it and the self utility spells would be useful and augment her unique abilities well, what do you think?

I just changed my mind - I'm going to take her a fighter direction - she has aptitudes for it and she won't loose as much as a spellcaster would, especially splitting levels between fighter and survivor (PrC from Savage Species)
