Half-ogre Str. Bonus.

Ok.

I have the 313 dragon magazine witht the article about half-breeds, and I was looking at maybe making a half ogre. In that article they say the half-ogre gets a +4 str bonus, but it also says that they are large size and you apply the size change modifiers in addition to the +4 str. The size change modifier to str. in table 4-2 of the monster manual is +8 which would give a total str. bonus of +12. That seems like an awfully high bonus for a +1 ecl (level 2 barbarian with a possible 30 str!!!). In addition, the str bonus for a regular ogre is +10, which would make ogres weaker than half ogres. I know I've gotta be getting something confused here.

I'd ignore that bonuses from size increase to attributes. It rarely makes sense for new races.

I think in one of the monster books though the half ogre is already defined.

Yeah. and its Str +6.

The 1/2 Ogre can be found in Savage Species as LA +1, but was later updated in Races of Destiny to LA +2.

IMHO, it's one of those LA 1.5 races, not quite strong enough to justify +2, but not weak enough to be +1. :(

I think I know what article that is. It also has a half-minotaur template, which is an ECL +1, that gives a big increase to Str and Con, and says to boost size to Large if base creature is medium, giving the ability increases for increased size. My friend made such a character, a fighter that uses a spiked chain. I've gotten to try out some fun character ideas in the game, but it's hard to look at it as a serious campaign when it feels like we're playing with cheat codes on- it's very difficult to avoid a trip from a large character with 30 or so strength, even with another large creature.

As others have said, go with the half-ogre out of Races of Destiny.

The Half Ogre should be LA +2. You get +6 to STR a + 4 or +2 to CON, Natural Armor +4, Large Size, Darkvision, and Reach.

Given a favored class of Barbarian, D12 HD and a CON bonus can make up the ground. That is a Barbarian character at Third level with +10 to STR. Pretty powerful.
