Has the horse left the barn?

re

I'm pretty happy with Pathfinder. I hope they start putting out books faster. But overall now I'm playing Pathfinder I'm much more impressed with their Adventure Paths and Campaign Setting Book than anything WotC has done in quite a while. I'm looking forward to them getting it together as their revenue streams improve. I'm hoping they improve their web site though. Make it easier to navigate and not quite so messy. I'm glad Pathfinder tends to test more than WotC, though it does slow down book publishing.

I don't think I'll ever play official D&D again until they make wizards what they are supposed to be, not this watered down, balance oriented thing they call a wizard that's supposed to be happy killing minions with Scorching Blast. No idea why they couldn't have found a way to improve the melees without destroying the caster classes like Pathfinder did.

The horse has left the barn, the ship has sailed, etc.
For me, too.

As I said in another thread, I might play 4E very casually if all of my other friends wanted to play, but (aside from just not being very likely) I won't be investing any money in the game.

And that's what it really comes down to, right?

My gaming dollars go to Pathfinder, Mutants & Masterminds, and (to a lesser extent) Shadowrun now.

When I want to play the D&D that I've played and loved since I was a kid, I play Pathfinder.

I do play in a weekly 4e game, because I love the group, but I find the system irritating. If not for that group, there'd be no looking back for me.

I do plan on giving 5e a look, with the hope that it ditches the rigid powers-based minis game aspects, and embraces a more freeform, story-telling approach. Hell, I'd consider it a huge improvement if it ended referring to distances as squares. Yech.

With my current regular group the rules don't matter much. We can have a fun game using just about anything. As far as playing the system for its own value outside of my group, it just doesn't motivate me. While I won't refuse to play in a 4E game, doing so will be entirely because of the people rather than the system.

I will be getting the new redbox set out of curiosity though.

There is actually an advantage to that. In the US (and UK), the most 'natural' measurement is the 5 foot square. In (mainland) Europe, it's most likely either the 1.5 or 2 metre square. By standardising on to a single measure, they provide consistency across all players, remove all need for conversion, and potentially simplify the math (1.5m squares are rather a pain to work with).

It just makes me appreciate that 3e is really not so bad. It does not have me going out to seek someone to run 3e, much less volunteering to do so myself.

"It's a Wonderful RPG", though, in that about-to-jump-off-the-bridge way.

So long, and thanks for the OGL!

No, I'm not likely to ever play 4E.

That ship has indeed sailed.

In fact, I'm done with the D&D edition treadmill. I have bought Pathfinder and will continue to do so, but I'm not interested in "5E" or any more new versions of D&D. I would be open to buying "unearthed arcana" style options for 3.5/Pathfinder, but another new edition? Nope.

In a way, 4E's bad fit was a blessing. I'm spending way less on RPG stuff now. And frankly, the WotC re-hashing of settings idea is a big turn off too. Dark Sun 4E?! C'mon - do something original!!!!!

I'll gladly play in a 4e game that someone else runs. Having a good GM / players / group to play with is much more important to me than the system we are running.

However, I will not likely run 4e any time soon. I prefer to run Pathfinder. Fits my style better. I think the GM should be largely responsible for what game system you play, anyway.

I'm the opposite - I'll play 3e if the game has a good concept, but there's no way I'm running that again. I wouldn't run it if you paid me. 4e just seems like so much less work to run.

I've GM'ed and played 4E and found both its sweet spots and its warts. The upcoming rule changes don't excite me and neither does the new Red Box, so I would have to also say that the horse has left the barn, ship has sailed etc etc.

Now having said that, if WotC could ever publish an actually original and creative setting for 4E, instead of all the re-treads they keep churning out, I would probably give it another go. But so far their 4E settings have left me significantly underwhelmed, and yet another version of Gamma World is hardly anything to get excited about.

In a way, 4E's bad fit was a blessing. I'm spending way less on RPG stuff now.

I agree. The only gaming companies getting any $ from me right now are Paizo (and their 3PP's) and Mage the Awakening. Not buying WotC products has saved me a lot of money.
