Has there ever been rules forbidding ranged attacks during Rage?

Rage does not mean stupid or lacking precision. The only abilities that are restricted are Combat Expertise (defensive option) and skills that require thought (you are too busy raging, so you simply wouldn't do those things). You retain the use of Combat Reflexes, Deft Opportunist, weapon specialization, sneak attack bonuses, martial maneuvers, style feats, and yes, use of ranged weapons.

That's odd. I thought that rage prohibitted the use of precision based damage (such as Sneak Attack). Can't recall where I read that, but I am virtually positive that I saw it someplace.

Nope.

And I've always loved the mental image of a raging half-orc performing a 'sneak attack' with a greataxe :D

Nah, it's as Klaus said, when raging you don't go completely spastic and out of control, grinding your teeth and shaking all over from barely controlled frenzy. You go Brock Sampson. There's a zone and you're not just in it, you own it. And you don't give a single thought toward defense, you're just a walking murder machine.

In a rage you don't concentrate - you don't need to. Mentally you're beyond concentration. You just do. But you don't need to concentrate in order to be precise, your body just needs to know how to move and everything else just falls into place.

Yes, that ability would give you some extra hp but turn you into a 1st level warrior. :)

I think 'no sneaking while raging' is reasonable. When our host DM's, he implements that and "no archery while raging". IMO the raging barbarian is frothing maniac who only knows friend from foe for game balance reasons. I also feel "any abilities that require patience or concentration" is more than close enough to aiming an arrow for an opening in a foes armor.

I loath that mental image, IMHO sneak should be done with a weapon of surgical precision.

I disagree. Sneak attack aims for the vitals.....can a barbarian not aim while raging?

As said by someone else, the logical conclusion to this line of reasoning is that all Bbns should have their BABs reduced to +1 while raging.

Nonsense! :]

A barbarian's rage is not all-consuming, rabid bloodlust. That's what the Frenzied Berserker is for. Rage is simply becoming very angry - which, although it does tend to impair judgement and rationality, does not altogether preclude intelligent thought.

I don't get the chance to PC too often, but next time I do I think I'll try a Rogue / Barbarian multi and see how it turns out. Although a Scout / Barbarian also sounds pretty good, now that I think about it (increased speed, some bonus feats, increase in AC that perhaps makes up a little for the drop due to raging, etc). It'll probably be a few months before I have the chance, but it should be interesting. Hmm, or perhaps I'll just create such an NPC and find a way to drop him in somewhere . . .

[Edit]
It occurs to me that this singular focus sounds rather akin to what martial artists seek to attain through training. Is there a Class or PrC that allows Monks, etc to attain a rage-like state, perhaps? Perhaps it could be called Ki Focus or some such.
