Help! I've been REINCARNATED as a BEAR

In one of our campaigns we don't have access to a high level cleric (yet, one of the PC's is Clr 8) but we have a circlet of reincarnation 1/week so this situation is becoming a constant for us. The dwarf is now a centaur, the halfling a badger, the elf was a black bear but used a wish to return to elf form (although the player almost got screwed over - she wished to become what she was 'originally'. I groaned and the DM got an evil glint - and then decided to be nice). Due to the fact that you retain your previous mental faculties the DM decided that the you retained your original favored class and racial skill bonuses, it's how you were brought up.

The centaur retained dwarven favored class and skill bonuses. The character retained his memory, INT, WIS, CHA. We did make the character now use the ECL for centaurs but the DM boosted the charcters XP total so that he retained his current level and would have to deal with the higher ECL from that point on.

The badger-cum-halfling is the party rogue and we had to have special thieves tools made for him to use disable and pick lock rolls. They basically are strap mounted over his claws. He takes one minute to get them one himself or another character can help him and it takes two rounds. He takes one step longer to perform these actions, i.e. one minute for a one round action, ten minutes for a one minutes action, etc.

Neither of these two are casters so we didn't have that problem. That is why the elf used a wish though. Didn't want to have the casting problems.

The MM entry is wrong. In order to use a mixture of natural and artificial weapons, you must use TWF. IIRC, the Sage was clarifying this in the MotW issue of Dragon; I think it was also covered in the issue dealing with Saurials.

Multiattack only applies to natural weapons.

Thank you for your reply, as I do not get Dragon magazine.

I'm not going to use the above ruling, however, as it is not official errata, nor does it make any sort of sense. I will gladly whip out my rule zero pen... :)

(My house rule will be that Multiattack always applies to natural attacks and Multidexterity and Multiweapon fighting always apply to manufactured weapons. Both types of weapons can be combined freely.)

Spells with paws instead of hands

I went through the 0-, 1- and 2-level cleric list of spells and these are the only ones that either didn't have a somatic component, or the somatic component seemed like it would work:

Cause/Inflict Light/Minor/Moderate Wounds

There's a somatic component, but the spell description implies that this is a simple "lay on hands." A bear should be able to do that, yes?

Light/Darkness

Requires a divine focus, so as long as my holy symbol can be focused on.

Command

Just a verbal component.

That's it. Nothing else available. Good thing I'm just a third level cleric.

When you level up, you should ask your bastard of a DM if you can exchange some of your now useless feats for still spell. At least you'd be able to cast most of your 1st level spells then.

The magnificent DM bastard has already ruled that he's not going to swap any feats out.

Now, if we really needed some of those spells, I could polymorph into something with hands. I do happen to own a magic ring that casts dispel magic once per day, so I could quickly return to my original form. That's a combination that might be worthwhile.

Time to start plaguing that DM with the nastier Command spells, since you will using that a lot I would guess. See how much he likes his armored villian Disrobing, with the comman "Disrobe". "Urinate" would probably get some interesting results as well. The command "Sleep" or "Die" makes the subject prone and stunned, according to the Sage. "Jump", "Come", "Flee", and "Run" can all be used to make a villian enter a dangerous area (like lava) if placement is correct. It's even arguable that you can hold a vial of poison up to a villians face and Command "drink". However for this last one I do not mean to imply that visual cues can be used in conjunction with the spell, just that the Command "drink" would generally make the target drink the nearest liquid, which in this case would be the vial in front of their face. Command can be a powerful, and fun, spell for you to use.

Additionally, you might also consider switching gods to the god of Music found in the Book of Eldritch Might II (Songs & Souls of Power), which has as its domain power the ability to make all your spells with verbal componants +1 caster level.

stay with the bear.. be the bear!!!

maybe like that anime series.. um.. I think it is Ranma 1 1/2

take some levels of monk.. then do Bear Kung Fu!!!

that is so cool..

in my game.. one of my fellow party members has just been reincarnated...as an elf..

now.. you might say.. where is the problem with that..

well.. his character has a certain personality trait.. that humans are the best.. all other races are sub. (my lizardman and him have some arguments).. now he is an elf.. MWA HA HA HA HA.. he hates himself.. and has hundreds of years to do it in!!!

Jeeze, if you were going to take having another form this badly, then why didn't you just not return when the druid cast reincarnate?

Make the most of it. Wait for your next feat. Get still spell. In the meantime, your massive bonuses to physical stats will probably let you out-fight the fighter.

Don't get me wrong....

I think being a bear is cool and I love how it has changed the role-playing dynamic. I'm just trying to figure out all the angles on actually living with a bear character with class levels, rather than trying to be a human being a bear.

And, unless I was ready to roll a new character or sit out a session, reincarnate was the only option. Again, I like it, it's fun. It's just mighty complex.
