Help me design a 12th level wizard!

IMO, Wands tend to be a bit limited - with the 4th level spell cap and all - Staves a bit too expensive for consumable items... I prefer to buy/find as loot.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Craft Wonderous Item - get a very wide variety of effects and item types available to you?

Another PrC I've always liked is the Loremaster - find it fits quite well with wizardly archetypes - IMO it offers a nice package of abilities and skills?

Archmage can be good to aim for - requirements aren't daunting and some of the high arcanas are seriously useful. IIRC, you can get the first level at 14th.

Having said that, the sevenfold veil initiate is very cool!

I' pulling a blank on Arcane Disciple; is it a prestige class or a feat, and where can I find it?

A feat from Complete Divine, which lets you add one cleric domain to your class spell list.

The Races books are about the only ones I don't own, but I'll check out elven substitution levels & Able Learner this week at my game.

Able Learner lets you learn all skills for 1 point per rank, which is kinda nice with the usually high Int wizards get. The elven substitution levels mostly give you most benefits of specialization (in particular one extra slot of the highest level) and none of the downsides (no prohibited schools).

What do people think about Item Creation feats? The DM is pretty lenient about giving us time to make stuff (the cleric spends all his time upgrading party magic items); I'm wondering if I should take Craft Wand or Craft Staff.

They are very cool, if you can spend the time to actually use them in the campaign.

Craft Wondrous Item is naturally the most useful, as it can do a huge variety of items.
Craft Wand is also nice, because it's not very costly. But you already have Scribe Scroll.
Craft Staff is only really good for high levels, because staffs always cost so much.

With the above feats you basically qualify for Archmage already, so it makes sense to aim for that one later. ;)

Archmage gives you some pretty awsome abilities. Read the class over some time. The one drawback is that it does require you to give up some spell slots in exchange for the High arcana abilities, but for example Energy Mastery which requires a 5th lv slot means never having to say "Hey they have resistance to that". If they're immune to fire, you just make that old fireball a cold ball or cone of cold into cone of Acid etc...

I HIGHLY recomend taking at least 3 or so Archmage levels.

Thanks!

Arcane Disciple - yeah, now I remember! I liked that one -- thought the Healing domain might come in useful.

The Archmage was the first prestige class that caught my eye, but Toad doesn't qualify yet. His feats so far do line up perfectly for it, so I'll probably switch over as soon as he advances that far.

I can take Craft Wondrous Item as my 5th level bonus feat, which leaves...
So. Augment Summoning or Arcane Disciple? (Able Learner's probably out of contention at this point).

Cheers!
Nell.

If you actually plan to summon stuff, which basically requires using some of your highest spell slots on those spells, then Augment Summoing is highly recommendable. Makes quite some difference.

OK, pending confirmation of the ruathar prestige class (Races of the Wild) from my DM (which I expect he'll OK since the campaign has been all about the elves so far), I'm going with a wizard 6 / ruathar 3 / initiate of the sevenfold veil 3. With a coure eladrin familiar. Yes, it's approved. Yes, Toad is a very good boy. :D (Meta-gaming-wise, Toad is going to be kick-ass. The Ruathar prestige class pays HIM -- he gives up nothing, gets better hit points, better BAB, better saves, better skill points, low-light vision, a magic item, and a boost to a few skills. It's sweeter than maple candy.)

Feats are as follows:
Bonus - Scribe Scroll
1-Spell Focus (Abjuration)
1(human)-Greater Spell Focus (Abjuration)
3-Skill Focus (Spellcraft)
5(wiz)- Craft Wondrous Item
6- Spell Focus (Conjuration)
9-Celestial Familiar
12- Augment Summoning

This'll be cool. With "Arvandor's Blessing" I can crank his real age up to 70 or so (he's already middle-aged), and give him some history from before half the party was born - probably history that ties together his coure and the elf-friend status. He's extremely humble, and doesn't like to acknowledge his actual ability as a wizard (which is considerable). Unfortunately, his coure ("Molly") likes to act as his herald/PR agent. It's terribly embarrassing, really.

Gotta save the pennies -- he's gonna make a robe of the archmagi in two levels....

Cheers
Nell.
