help me hold a charge

I'm a bit new to this, and I could use some quick assistance.

Let's say I am a Wizard 3/Fighter 2 with no armor, a longsword, and a lizard familiar on my shoulder. Before an orc closes into melee with me, I cast shocking grasp, designating my familiar as the "toucher" and holding the charge. My lizard then jumps off my shoulder and moves a little bit out of harm's way.

On the next round, the orc moves next to me and attacks. On my turn, I attack with my longsword. The battle continues for a few more rounds, during which time I only attack with my sword. According to shocking grasp's description, the charge lasts until I cast another spell. If all I do is attack with my sword, is my familiar able to hold the charge for as long as necessary before moving in with the touch attack?

Thanks for any help. I am trying to figure out effective ways to use familiars. I don't like the idea of keeping mine in my pocket all the time.
