Help with a 30th Level Monk

Scion said:
... I have not been discussing a vop useing tomes at all, at any time. ....(snip)...I did say that having the bonus on them should count against their wealth as though they had used a tome, but that is no where near the same thing.

Vop characters have the same wealth guidelines as anyone else, one of their feats say that they cannot gain material objects and gives bonuses to compensate. So, the character normally cannot use any of this personal wealth. However, the bonuses are 'not' items, it does 'not' take items to get the bonuses, and at no time would the vow be broken by getting or having them.
These paragraphs could do with some closer scrutiny.

Vow of Poverty and the stat-boosting magic is kind of silly. Waiting until you hit 18th level and could afford the tomes for real and then taking vow of poverty should work, but the real problem is trying to model a dynamic ability (Vow of Poverty having a different impact depending on when you take it) with a character made at one point in time. Really, 9 extra Vow of Poverty exalted feats are pretty worthless when you already can get 6 of them.

This is like retroactive int bonus, only it actually matters for the character. The “I have permanent magic cast on me” aspect of Vow of Poverty probably violates the spirit of the law, as Vow of Poverty is meant to replace your magic items and a permanent spell is pretty similar to a magic item. On the other hand, I don’t remember any rule about “you can’t have permanent spells cast on you.” So your VoP character could get a wish cast on his as a reward.

If you are trying to optimize a character, skip VoP entirely. At epic levels character wealth is absolutely ridiculous. With that in mind, getting +5 to all stats still leaves Vow of Poverty lacking. +10 “Armor” may technically be “worth” +1,000k gp, but when you only have +3 natural armor you could go +8 Armor and +5 Natural Armor for a bargain 115k gp. I played a VoP Monk through level 17 and at that point VoP’s marginal benefits become worthless next to the 100+k gp other party members get each level.

Personally, if I were a 30th level Monk I’d spend my 10000000 gp on a lot of items of flame-extinguishing.

Hmm...maybe you could explain what the strawman is? Rystil is going by the rules on everything. I think it's odd that you would let a VoP character get extra things because he's poor, when characters with wealth can't afford the same things. Perhaps you could explain why, without hand-waving and wish-granting?

If a 3rd-level character takes VoP, any magic items that he used prior to this would have to be made with the wealth of a 3rd-level character (or, one could argue, 2nd-level character). I don't recall exactly how much a +5 book costs, but I seem to remember it being out of the range of a 2nd or 3rd level character. And the VoP monk won't buy it after he takes his vow, so I don't know where you think the inherent +5 bonuses are coming from.
Just to clear this up, I agree with this assertion under normal circumstances. However, I was told specificly to "Munchkin out" this character, and since the end of the world is in sight, I am designing a background of my character based on this. (A prophesized chosen one who will have all knowledge and wealth brought to him, but will study and turn his back on the wealth and become a savior to the people.). So, I am going to go with him spending a fraction of the 5,000,000 gold I believe he is supposed to get on those books, and have read them at an early age. If gold/level is an issue, I can fidangle that a bit (There are a few exhaulted feats I don't need that I have) and see what I get, or I can remove the VoP and see what I get (Which I may anyway just to compair).

Rystil, sorry you had this problem. The same thing happened in a different thread that he stoped going to when he disagreed with everything everyone else said. I have appreciated your input. Guess I'll have to play mail-tag with you.

My big problem is that I'm pondering the Leadership feat, not for the cohort, but for the followers that he likely has illicited, but I guess if I play down that he doesn't control them and they generaly follow his lead but not in the same fashion, then I guess it's not realy the feat. I'm not looking for an advantage of free feat out of this, this is more a background thing, and mostly a mystical support network to raise him more than a true set of followers and people who obay his every command.

The more I look at it, the more I'm inclined to agree with that. There are a few nice abilities, but most of them are reproducable through magic items, or the Saint Template There were a couple of Exhaulted feats I realy want, but I think I can figure out how to get them normaly (Drop the power attack and the 2 other feats taht need it, maybe take the sword of rightousness PrC, though that costs me an epic feat, I definately want the Touch of Golden Ice, as well as ways to add holy damage to my unarmed attacks, and the Fist of the Heavans, though that's a class feat for the Initiate, as well as insightfull strike will be needed) The stats may drop a bit, but I'm sure I can figure out a way to fix that.

I need ways to raise my BAB (note that Wisdom will likely be the to hit for melee for me), as well as apply magical damage and other forms of damage to my unarmed strikes.

Good of you to point them out to other people, they need to read it over. Going along with the raw works well, vop is a complicated issue.

Oh, and bront, two seperate things. The other thread (of which I guess you have only seen two threads I have been in, but some go better than others, as with anyones) had people who refused for many posts to give anything more reasonable than screaming 'broken' without saying why (eventually this cleared up, but by then I was sick of it and went elsewhere for help) and this one where people are literally going against the raw.

It happens. But, I am trying to show where they are going against what the raw says, as is the wont of the forum.

If people feel that I am wrong in the rules here they are free to post rules quotes that say what they mean.

I realize this is difficult and that people have differing viewpoints, but making up strawmen to knock down or completely making up new rules to support your position is just bad.

Vop makes for a lot of debate on a lot of issues, this one is no different. However, just because someone cannot use money directly does 'not' mean that they cannot get services.

I don't think that's what he meant, Scion.

I know it isnt, but if he has an issue specifically he should call it out. Until then I'll just assume he is pointing out the good points for those detractors who are apparently going against the raw.

As is just because someone cannot use money does not mean they cannot get services.

If someone has a rules quote that says vop characters cannot have people do them favors ever, or cast spells on them, or something else equally ridiculous feel free.

Until then however, saying it is impossible is just plain wrong. It is well within the realm of possibilities. It may be difficult, or have far reaching ramifications, or who knows what, but that is up to the dm.

I dont know how to say it any clearer than that. Does anyone have any rules against it?

Actualy, several people did, you just weren't listening when the gave you thing to look at, and were general attacking of anyone who even responded nicely. And while yes, that is the only other thread I've been in with you, this is exactly what happened. And the fact that you simply stoped posting when people did what you asked has served to show them that you won't admit you were wrong, but will simply run away when you can't argue any more. (Honestly, that's what it looks like to me, as well as several others) And here, you won't drop an issue after others seem sick of it, and the person who asked the question has said what he feels. It seems to me you realy like to debate, but perhaps you need to be willing to look at other's points than simply dismissing them as unproven if they don't quote the rules. I didn't see you quote any either.

Not only that, but keep in mind, the issue you all are arguing about I've already specifcly said "I understand it can be a normal issue and agree that it should normaly be a problem, but in this case, I think I might be able to get away with it specificly because I was asked to munchkin up the character."

Now, if anyone has usefull information to post on the topic at hand, I would appreciate it. I'm still looking to tweek him. Tips on Equipment would be very usefull. I have a lot of money to toy with, and, as I said earlier, have never had an epic level character, and am generaly not up on how to muchnkin him out at times.

I'm sorry if I was rough, but it needed to be said. Take it as constructive criticism like it is ment, and not an attack. And then drop it.

Ok, the sainted VoP.

I'll remove the VoP in a bit to see what I can do with that.

Non VoP monk. I didn't include any of the items in the character sheet math yet, they are ones I am thinking about. Some will have to be combined or turned slotless (1.5 to x2 cost) in order for them to stack.

I still need a good item that lets me get weapon properties on my hands. I see one that gives me +5 enchantment, but no other special abilities.

Items are the math section at the bottom.
