help with lvl 5 character

okay, this is the deal.

we are starting a new campaign at level five, so i need some advice on fun characters to play. the party consists of a rouge, a monk, a wizard and me, who doesnt know what to play.

i was thinking mayby a barbarbarin or figter, since we tend to run quite combatheavy campaigns, and then get the leadership feat to get a cleric follower.
or the oterway around play a cleric, then get a fighter cohort. the only bad thing whith this that it could be hard to survive until lvl 7.

anyone have a different suggesion, is it just i that think monks are to weak to be the "hitpoint powerhouse" in the party, and stand in the way for everything, (my experience certanly says so ). i am open for all suggertions.

how about a half-orc or dwarf cleric with the war and destruction domains or something like that? you know, something with oomph.

Multiclass as a fighter 2/cleric 3. Cast bull's strength and/or endurance on yourself each day, and try to pick up a wand of cure light wounds from somewhere.

Cleric

I'd go with a singleclass cleric. Get your hands on several curing wands as soon as possible.

Boost yourself and your comrades fighting power with lots of endurance and bulls strength spells. Use bless, divine favor, shield of faith (on scrolls at best...) to boost up your own fighting prowess and you'll be nearly as good as a fighter. Take high Strength and use a big weapon like a greatsword. Heavy armours and Magic Vestment (as lvl5 cleric you can cast two of those per day) are very useful too.

Take care to keep scrolls at hand. Scribe Scroll feat is your best friend.

If you are more concerned about staying alive and let the others do the damage, take a large shield and cast magic vestment on shield AND armour. Though I would advise to cast something like that on the monk.

Take War domain and that magic domain that lets you use arcane things as a wiz of half your caster level and get a wand of mage armour, your monk will love you.
