If Hero's so great, how come none of my players have ever heard of it?
HERO has been around (usually in the form of Champions) since 1981. Your players haven't heard of it because they are relatively new to RPGs and HERO spent around 6 years bouncing between owners who didn't know how to put out a book. The current owners have created a heavy schedule of releases and have managed to stick to it.

Whether HERO is better than d20 is a moot point. HERO is a point buy system, like GURPS. Comparing point-buy systems to class systems is like arguing about favorite colors. Everyone knows red (cherry or fire engine) is the best color. :)

*note highlight to see*
*sings* I see a red door and I want it painted black/No colors anymore I want them to turn black/I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes/I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

Look mommy, a troll! Can I pet it?

Is that kinda inane comment necessary? Couldnt you think of anything entertaining to post in response, rather than rushing to be the first to point out the obvious?

That said.... Hero suxxx!!! d20 RAWKZ!!! :D

HERO's nice and all. I played it for a couple of years.

Really, though, I think the Paranoia system is far underrated. A couple of tweaks and it makes an exellent generic/cross-genre system.

I'm amazed no one has done this sooner.

Bah! With the creeping HEROization of D&D, I predict that 4E will be indistinguishable from Steve Jackson's magnum opus for all practical purposes.

Hong "remember, you heard it here first" Ooi

I'm a d20 gamer, but I've known Steve Long since his employment at Last Unicorn Games. He wrote Star Trek: Deep Space Nine core rulebook for that company, until it is acquired by Wizards. He then contributed to Wheel of Time d20 RPG.

He and the LUG folks were let go as part of the massive layoff (and the fact that Steve did not want to leave North Carolina) but were rehired by Decipher who acquired Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. Steve Long wrote the draft for LOTR RPG using the Coda System. But he accepted the job to head Hero Games and develop the Hero System product.

For that, I'm proud of him.

Say what you want to say, I don't have any allegiance to any one particular game or rules system, even at this time when I prefer to play d20. I picked up Hero System 5th Edition and despite the bulk size, I like it.

With the exception of the "bucket o dice" system, I'm glad I played various games with various rules and not just one. In fact, I still play Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with Spacedock* and Ship Recognition Manuals*, all written by Steve Long.

Hi all,

Posted by Bugaboo:
Title says it all. Hero rox; d20 sux.

Man, Bugaboo, you're really slipping. I come here looking for a troll and get a plain statement of simple and obvious truth. What happened? :(

Hong, on the other hand...sublime... :D

Don't sweat it, Bugaboo, I'm sure you'll be back on your game in no time....

I always like the hero system but for some reason I only like playing it when I played a superhero campaign.

Maybe its because d20 is easier for character creation on fantasy classes like mages. Or maybee its the ancestors of TSR whispering to me that says playing anything but d20 for high fantasy is just wrong.

All the same for complete character creation freadom Hero system can't be beat. Even with 3rd ed feats and skill system.
