As we know, every cave has a child

Honesty, I get it. I don't usually put monster kids in my dungeons BUT i'm also a big fan of the heroes having to make moral choices.

If an adventure has them finding monster kids or eggs or whatever, I'm interested to see what they do.

Not everything should be an easy served on a platter black and white choice IMO.

Unless that's what you are going for. More power to you.

If it were me, I'd make the Caves less of a tribal land and more of a staging ground for a war and thus only have soldiers and support personnel rather than civilians. The tribes send their warriors to serve the grand warlord, the women and children remain in places off camera and away from the action.

I'm perfectly fine with ignoring the existence of children when it comes to lairs and dungeons.
You immediately made me think of this cartoon..

Given this format, I expect the Caves to be completely re-worked and reduced in scope quite a bit. I'd be surprised if it was the "Evil Humanoid Hotel (with Bonus Evil Temple)" of the original.

Assuming that's the case, a retrofitted Caves might include:

1. The Evil Temple with undead and a BBEG.
2. Two, maybe three of the humanoid groups. Something like the goblins (with the hired Ogre) overseen by Hobgoblins and Bugbears, all who are aligned with the temple.
3. The Owlbear. But now the owlbear has a broken spear stuck in it and a young owlbear you can adopt...

I'm a fan of tough choices, too. I wouldn't do it in a starter adventure, though; let the newbies get their feet wet with the game systems and how their characters work before we go all Game of Thrones on them.

I hope we get something other than goblins......

Yeah, I was thinking that myself.

Recent starter adventures have been using this (good!) format, more or less:

1. Small encounter area
2. Sandbox area where PCs make choices
3. Final larger encounter area

A revamp of the Borderlands probably means that the sandbox is the wilderness and the final area is a version of the caves. Maybe the first encounter area could be -- at last! -- the Cave of the Unknown, which was mentioned but never detailed.
