Hexblade Blackguard

First Post
Hey guys:

I have a new pen and paper campaign starting, and I am gonna be travelling with: Half-Dragon Giant, Feral Tiefling, Half-Fey Elven Archer, and me.

I think I am going Human, and I am considering a Ranger 1/Hexblade 5 going to Blackguard next level.

How would you all twink this out?

I could go with a template, but every +1 means I need yet another level to hit blackguard, so I have mostly avoided it. Everyone is at ECL 6, so I have 6 class levels as a human.

You're pretty eager to become a blackguard, eh?
A little more patience is gonna pay out though. Try two levels of Rogue instead of that Ranger lvl. (what is that good for anyway, besides access to the "hide" skill?)
Get evasion (hey, you're gonna be a serious saver, at least against spells...if you're up to what I think), sneak attack and a ton of skill pts. at 1st lvl. Don't forget to beef-up UMD, handsome ;)

You're prabably gonna be the face of the party, too. So invest in Bluff and Diplomacy. (a "circlet of persuasion" might come in handy here).

Wearing light armor (go for glamored elven chainmail) and having access to "expeditious retreat" you're gonna be pretty mobile (also see the "strategic charge" spell on the blackguard list), so use that to your advantage (e.g. getting into flanking position or bestowing save-penalties to those in need).

Think about getting "raptor school" as a feat for quicker feinting, so you don't have to rely on flanking

"Charm person" can do a lot, since you're presenting some nice DCs, even for low lvl. spells
, especially if they are close by (aura of despair).
And don't get stuck with a petty familiar. it doesn't mix so well with being a front-liner. get the "practiced spellcaster" and "improved familiar" feats later on (as well as the "augment familiar" spell) if you like serious familiars.

And of course, as a serious villain, you need "leadership". aahhh...all those minions you can lead to glorious battles...and gory deaths

Crush'em beneath your plate boots :]
...or tell'em what they wanna hear... :)

Hehe.

I am up to this: Charisma 22. +6 Cha bonus. Arcane Resistance +6, Dark Blessing +6. Mettle. Evasion would combo nicely. Yeah, Ranger is for hide, also, Favored Enemy would also be nice, but we start at level 6, not getting into blackguard till 8 and my dark blessing till 9 is a little rough, though. Also, Ranger has 2 good base saves, which is nice.

Here are a couple of other ideas, and some thoughts on my thoughts on the characters direction

Rogue 2 Hexblade 5 - Lots of skill points, evasion, extra sneak, gets blackguard at 8 Feats: Power Attack, Cleave, Improved Sunder, Close Quarters Fighting, Another Feat

Cleric 2(Trickery, something) Hexblade 5 - great saves, quicker access to turning for divine might/divine shield so, Power Attack, Cleave, Imp Sunder, Divine Might, Divine Shield

Ranger 1 Hexblade 5 for quickest entry into Blackguard at 7, for dark blessing at 8. Thats Power Attack, Cleave, Imp Sunder, Close Quarters Fighting, Another Feat

I want to get into the feats that use turning, as I will have a massive charisma, and they all combo SO well with massive charisma. My saves will be out of this world, and as far as it goes, I will be the hardiest person in the group, with everyone else having 3 or 4 hit dice and myself with 5 or 6 fighter dice. My stats, rolled are outrageously high, but theirs are just foolish, with their templates, so I will eventually be overshadowed, unless I do crazy stuff myself.

This game, as put forth from the DM, is about 2 things: Playing the character you always wanted to play in another game, but werent allowed, and, optimization. He loves the optimization boards, and plans to see how well he can handle powergamed PCs.

That said, not only am I a minmaxer, I am also quite fond of character and rp, so I want my cake, and I plan to eat it too.

don't ask me, I don't design characters to be twinked.

Do you think that was really necessary with this thread?

To chime in, I would go with the rogue 1/cleric 1/blackguard for a bit of everything. You still get the nice skill boosts, your saves will be even better, you get access to turning for all those nice turning feats.

Problem with Rogue 1/Cleric 1 is neither gives a bab adjustment, and I'd miss out on Evasion by not hitting rogue 2. So I'd be Rogue 1 Cleric 1 and then need another +1 to bab.

I'm palying a hexblade 3/cleric 1/rogue 1 , character at the moment. If your not going to continue with hexblade levels, I'd stop after 3. To increase your BAB, i'd go with hexblade 3/fighter 3. That way you get plenty of feats. If you can wait a level to take your blackguard level, there are advantages to taking a cleric or rogue level.
