Hmmm, the poll really needs a 'Both' category...

Outside: Hexes
Inside: Squares

But really I prefer niether and like using a ruler and some terrain instead.

Hexes whenever possible. Squares are far too clumsy and lead to oddly-designed and unrealistic combat models.

i've been using squares since 3e came out, but my group has been talking about going back to hexes lately. i have always liked the feel of hexes, although i don't think i buy that either one is easier or more convenient than the other.

OH no it is too difficult to place 8 figures on hexes. After all if the figure steps on line it will break Eric's Grandma's back. Oh whoa is us who set in our ways and don't know when to forget the lines on mapboard.
 

I have a hex mat & a square one. Although I don't run d20 any more (SAVAGE WORLDS IS WHERE IT'S AT, BABY!! ;) ), I use squares because my WorldWorks scenery is grid based. :) Hexes are a better system, IMO though. I seriously think that WotC picked squares because GURPS uses hexes. ;)

For areas of effects, I just use cut out templates and set them on the tactical to see who gets blown up and who doesn't. :D
