Hey grammarians - proofreading question!

I don't necessarily follow strict style guidelines; I write the way I would speak.

That means that, depending on the length of the pause I might leave while speaking, the punctuation I choose might change.

I've been told by people who know my speaking style that they can 'hear my voice' when reading something I've written more clearly than with most people.

And as a programmer, my placement of punctuation relative to quotation marks and parentheses is highly dependent on the relationship of that punctuation to the clauses in question. I frequently use the construction referenced earlier - something like:
And then he shouted "Police!", and "Stop where you are!".
... because my sentence ends in a period, even though his ends in an exclamation point.
