Hey, I'm new!

The number of hit dice corresponds with the number of levels. So a fourth level bard would have 4 hit dice because every time a character levels you get to trow your hit die and add that number to your hit points. Each of the classes has a different type of hit die. Some (the more brainy types) have a D4 or D6 as hit die, others (the more muscely types) have D8 or D10 as hit die. A creatures strength is indicated by the number of hit dice since they have no levels per se (there are ways but that should not concern you as a player, your DM will be happy to play with creatures HD ;-) ) So a a creature with 3 HD is tougher than a creature with one HD. For a lot of stuff (notably spell effects and turning undead) the number of HD is used to determine the outcome. For instance casting a sleep spel will allow you to put a certain number of HD worth of creatures to sleep. If the targeted creature is tougher (has more hit dice than you could put to sleep) it will not be affected.

Wizards of the Coast have a nice glossary prepared for DnD at >THIS LINK< where you'll find lots of explanations and definitions!

ENJOY!

Thanks, you rock! (which is the highest praise I ever give anyone.)

Well, we think new players rock too, you super-star, mega-ultra-peachy, groovy-keen spellslinger!

(this is the highest praise I ever give anyone)

You mentioned having no stuff.

This is a link to the System Reference Document. It is the legal, publically released version of the D&D rules. It won't tell you everything, nor is it written with newbies in mind. However, it will let you look stuff up for free.

Of course, you could always just post here too.

Thank you Biggusgeekus, once again, you rock! P.S. Do you have any ideas as to what I should buy? I am a level 10 sorcerer with 49,000 gp to spend.

Greetings Enchantress. Allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste. ;) Serious, I'm Nightfall, local semi-pompous guy, as also Sage/Evangalist of the Scarred Lands. (That's a campaign setting/world that I've kind of helped to cultivate around here)

As for what I would get, since I take we are sticking with CORE, (meaning what to get out of the Dungeon Master's Guide or DMG also Core Rulebook II or CR II on occasion), I'd take what ever these friendly people suggest, especially Crothy and Fidgit, and Shark would suggest.

Non-core (meaning stuff out of Magic of Faerun for example, or perhaps Book of Eldrith Might, or even my personal favorite, Relics and Rituals 1 and/or 2)...hard to say. Plenty of choices there. I prefer to know what your character is about PLUS the setting and your Dm. :) Helps me to determine choices.

Welcome to the boards Enchantress!

You are now a part of the most powerful D&D/d20 message boards ever created in the history of role playing! The sheer magnitude of power and information can cause a man to explode in sheer ecstasy of this!

Enjoy :)

Welcome to ENworld! Here's my 2 cents . . .

For only 40,000 GP (the bulk of what you'vbe got, though), you can buy a Ring of Wizardry II. This doubles the number of 2nd level spells that you get in a day. You'd normally get 6 plus a few bonus spells for high Charsima, now you'll get 12 plus some bonus spells. It doesn't leave much room for wands and stuff, but for an extra 6 spells per day, I say that it's worth it.

With an extra 6 2nd level spells, you could cast. . .
6 more Bull's Strengths, Cat's Graces, or Endurances (the others in the party will love you for that),
6 more Melph's Acid Arrows (A little damage each turn for a long time), or
6 more Invisibilities (all-round great spell)!

With the other 9,000 GP, I'd say get . . .
about 10 scrolls of 1st to third levels, of spells that you don't have. Get scrolls of spells that you DO NOT know, and are only useful in specific situations. They're a nice save-my-tail item.
Wings of Flying. They greatly enhance your mobility, and let you shoot down your ranged damage spells (like Magic Missile, Fireball, and others) from where enemies can't reach. Also, it eliminates the edge that some flying creatures have.
A potion or five of Haste. In fact, don't get a potion of it, just learn the spell. Best damn spell in the game, IMHO.
A few potions of Cure Moderate Wounds. Every character should have 2 or 3 of these.

Hmmm, you like Scarred Lands which is okay, so you do seem to have some taste. As for the wealth part, well, I don't believe so. At least not yet. :D
