The "just a number" thing is inaccurate. There are about 10,000 numbered objects out there that also have names, as can be seen on the offical list of minor planet names.

There's a good reason to at least change Pluto's name. A Solar satellite with the name of a Roman god might easily be mistaken as a planet.
