Hide and total Concealment

I play a rogue/sadowdancer with the hide in plain sight class feature.

My question is, if she successfully hides (no one has spotted her after she hid) Does she have total concealment.

Well, you need some sort of concealment to hide, be it a barrel, door, or in your case, a shadow. If you successfully hide, you have total concealment. If your source of concealment goes away (they walk around the barrel, the door is disintegrated, or someone has darkvision near your shadow), then you are no longer considered hidden.

Actually, with the hide in plain sight class feature, you don't need a source of concealment to hide. For a 17th level ranger, you have to be in a natural setting, for a shadowdancer, you have to be within 10 feet of shadow. Darkvision wouldn't break the hiding, but total darkness or a bright, sourceless light would - as both would eliminate shadows.

Hide in Plain Sight (Su): A shadowdancer can use the Hide skill even while being observed. As long as she is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow, a shadowdancer can hide herself from view in the open without anything to actually hide behind. She cannot, however, hide in her own shadow.

Interesting, I always figured that the shadows are what the shadowdancer used for concealment so they could hide. Therefore, darkvision would see you unless you had some other ready cover. Similarly with the ranger, no natural setting, no concealment, no hiding.

Why would Darkness cancel the HIPS? Not many can see through magical darkness and effectively those that cant are blinded and what not. So flatfooted

total darkness already provides total concealment for any without darkvision. but it doesn't provide shadow for HiPS. So if you're facing someone with darkvision in total darkness, you're stuck with the bluff distraction/hide option.

Unless, of course, you use the concept of global shadows - in which case the total darkness is a shadow and thus still allows the shadowdancer to use his HiPS ability. :)
