Hiring mercenaries?

If I understand the breackdown of what the OP is saying, is "Spending x amount of gold at low levels can gain you power through allies to fight for you" and the following conversation has been on the subject of hiring humanoid mercenaries.

I'd like to suggest that instead of hiring and paying regularly for some Mercs, you instead keep max ranks in Handle Animal skill and keep some pets. I once saw a clever build for level 1 Sorcerer who had 3 dogs that were trained in combat. At verbal command as a free action, this Sorcerer could send the dogs to fight melee, while the sorcerer could do what sorcerers do. It was a pretty useful combo for a level 1 character.

Investing your money into purchasing trained animals saves in the use of the Leadership Feat, saves in having to pay your allies regularly (just food in bellies and tummy rubs and they're good!) and, honestly, lessens the consequences when they die. You can pick up 3 more dogs/wolves/veloceraptors etc after yours get killed, the new creatures aren't likely to have heard your reputation for allowing the death of the past ones the same way humanoids would.
