Hit Points, Hit Points, Hit Points

How do players determine hit points when they level

  • Max HP for the level

    Votes: 5 2.9%
  • Half the die value

    Votes: 15 8.6%
  • Make em roll

    Votes: 129 73.7%
  • Other

    Votes: 26 14.9%

I voted half the die value, but that isn't completely acurate. On even numbered levels, they get half the maximum die roll. On odd levels, they get that number +1. This is closer to the true average HP.

We make 'em roll, but they get to reroll a one. However, if the reroll turns up as a one, in our view that character was destined to get a one, so they are stuck with it. Seems to work pretty well, though it's not fun when the dice decide to hate you for a level or two.

That's what we do, with the caveat that wizards don't get to reroll. You want hit points, don't play a wizard.

We roll, but I have toyed with an idea, inspired by my Gnomish Wizard. Though the dice had been kind to him, near max HP, I was thinking of a Limited Wish giving you 1 HP per casting, not to exceed your maximum potential.

Thoughts?
Maybe I just don't get it... This has nothing to do with the actual rolling but with simply allowing Limited Wishes to grant a permanent HP boost of +1, right?

As long as you don't mind it as a DM it works, altho it should be used in a non-metagaming way. ;)

We roll them, as per normal. However, we have one twist. If a player of mine rolls really low, say 1-2 or 3 on a d10, then I will roll behind the screen and I will ask them if they want my roll instead. They have to take it no matter what. Mostly they won't because they don't want to tempt fate.

we use 3/4 of the HD. So on a d4 you get 3 etc.

DC

I use something similar Roll or 2/3 whatever is better.

In the game I play in you get two rolls, take the better.

I just cheat and set em anyway I think they should be-- Usually a 3 for my Sorcerer. The DM knows and doesn't really care

Maximum each level. I can throw nastier baddies at them, and they don't die too quickly. But they still die now and then. Nothing like a bucketload of hit points to make a player overconfident. BWHAAHAHAHAHA. ahem.

I have been allowing my players to roll and no matter what they roll they are allowed to reroll if they so choose. However, the rule is, if they choose to reroll, they must take the second roll no matter what it is. This generally allows slightly above average rolls, but there has been at least one occassion where after rolling a 2, a reroll produced a 1 and they were stuck with the 1.

Lower Levels. Roll once. if you dont like it, DM roll(secret). he asks if you want yours or his, w/o telling you his.
higher levels. roll. take what you get.
