How much free stuff do you give your players? I wanted them to have a base of operations, and I made it happen, giving them a serious discount on a small fortified building. Should this be done? This of course does not only apply to buildings, but equipment, NPC help, etc.

There's nothing wrong with giving the characters something you want them to have. Just have a 'backdoor' if they misuse it.

I gave my Modern crew a mansion in the Hollywood hills. They use it for a long time, and it works perfect! They never tried to sell it, although it came up in conversation every once in a while. But of course, the house had a deeper purpose all along...and then it burned down. Was fun!

Moral? There's supposed to be a moral?

My players have gotten suspicious of freebie gifts. Gave a keep to a character along with a small force of soldiers. Two sessions later he was Beholdered to death.

It was his own fault. He did try death from above against said beholder. All in all, he was charmed, slept, turned to stone, and disintegrated. He made the other saves.

In this case, it was a small thing. They needed a building to use as part of their cover. They are in the city under false names, and wanted to give their presence a level of repectablity. So they bought an old lighthouse keep in one of the more historic, but rundown parts of the city. The listed cost in Sword and Fist is 110,000, which I thought was insane. I redid it using Stronghold Builders Guidbook and got the cost to 83,000. I figured that the place had gone down in price, as it is in a bad part of town, and has a tendency to flood a little. One of the PCs is pretending to be a historian, focusing on the old city, which sank into the swamps a few centuries ago.
