Hollywood just doesn't get it

Hollywood blaming us for not being in-sync with them? Meh. Like that's new.

I do agree with you on this. Hollywood in general have not been on the pulse of their movie audience to impress us. IOW, it is just another summer slump. That and DVD/HET and the rising movie ticket price, etc.
Don't forget Star Wars: A New Hope would have not been made if it was up to Hollywood and Lord of the Rings was the same way. My problem with Hollywood is that they are pricing themselves out of the market, the big screen is just an ad for DVD sales.

Last week or was it the week before, there was a major payolla (sp) dealing with record labels paying off radio sations to play their music, Sony being one. I can not believe the same does not happen for movies.

There has been similar stuff with movie critics. You know those critics that you see guoted with glowing snippet reveiews of movies that suck? Many of them write for insanely obscure media outlets, and only get invited to screenings because they gush over movies. If they don't gush, they don't get invited back. In one case, one of these "critics" was entirely made up by a pair of studio employees.

No offense, RR, but as you earlier in this thread admitted that you are pretty much only a genre movie fan, I wouldn't take your opinion on the broad ramifications of mainstream summer movies and their sales data as very informed or informative. :)

Although I do agree with reveal's general premise; the conclusion the Hollywood exec reached is preposterous.

I think the biggest problem with Hollywood is that they aren't putting out enough stuff that I like. If they focused on more KaosDevice centric content the rest would shake itself out naturally and everyone would be much happier.

;)

I read something not too long ago that suggested the studios were vastly overstating how far box office receipts were off this year; last year, The Passion of the Christ had a lot of people in theaters that normally wouldn't have been, but compared to two years ago, this year is about the same. Personally, I've seen more movies in the first half of this year, but that's going from two to four.

Simple, Mr. Buer is simply covering his ass. He doesn't want to help directly responsible for the movie's low movie sales, so it's easy for him and his career to state, "Comedies are big this summer!" The gullible will shallow his tripe and he will continue to be employed.

Check out foreign films.

The Korean "Old Boy" is such a good revenge movie that movie-makers might as well stop making them. "It has been done to perfection", to quote Mr. John Cleese.

Actually I disagree with that. Michael Bay did The Rock and Con Air and Armageddon, three hugely grossing films that were absolute crap,
(I actually never saw Armageddon, but I suspect its crap).

Now fast forward to today, and sales are soft for The Island which is worlds away above the other films mentioned above, and on its own not a bad movie,(actually in the hands of another director willing to expand upon some ideas raised in the movie, it could be a very good movie). So clearly something has changed if people before were willing to shell hard earned dollars to see Bay's previous " big bang experience" and now oddly enough they are not.

Given what is going on with America right now, I can see a plausable explanation, in people wanting to laugh.
Another intresting factor is that the action movies that have grossed the largest amount, and have received the highest critical acclaim, are also movies of a long standing brand,(Batman and Star Wars).
Sure both of those actually had compeling plots and character development, but might name brand recgonition also get people in.
