Homebrew Humans (Heroic Tier)

Quickleaf

Legend
For anyone interested, here are the first four of my homebrew "redcoats", mean and tough human soldiers serving a wicked Prince.

I haven't used them in game yet (we start this friday), so if you have any critique I can still make changes before game.

These are quite interesting, however you seem to have your own system for minions. I am surprised to see a level 3 minion with a 2d6+6 basic attack!

Is this a system you have used before, if it is how does it play out in game? (I am assuming it must work otherwise you would not use it, but I am still intrigued as the possible damage output for essentially 4 times the number of creatures seems deadly especially at low levels)

Yeah, I'm giving them higher than normal damage for a couple reasons. First, they're brutes and that's their shtick - I want them to be scary but fall quick. Second, I avoid using more than 1 or 2 soldiers per battle so the PCs won't be distracted from wailing on the minions. Third, the party has 7 players with 2 leaders. Fourth, I want to encourage tactical thinking - you don't want to get flanked by a bunch of these guys.

That said, I've only done a couple test runs. Friday I'll find out if it's too much and make any necessary adjustments.

Yeah that all makes sense, especially with 7 PCs.

I have a 6 PC group and have used encounters with up to 65 minions in play at once, so I would certainly appreciate any lessons you learn from your "standard damage" minions.

I suspect one lesson is: "A lot of dice to roll". I would probably at least "averagize" the damage to something like 13 damage.

The MM2 Minions deal more damage, at least the Brute equivalents. So upping the damage for Minions sounds generally not so bad.
