Like many, found the original class lacking in identity as well having features that function only when specific conditions are met. Never found that damage was an issue, just the features. Over the years, this version has changed slightly, but the features we wanted included has remained the same. The changes are:
- Prepared caster. Rangers are/should be able to adapt. Allowing them to change spells after a rest allows them to overcome obstacles.
- As they are hunters, but not thieves, a tool (Trapper's Kit) was created to help them set and disarm traps that do not have locks or uses keys.
- Hunter's Mark spell is frustrating due to concentration as you can not combine it with other spells that also have concentration. Many want it as a feature but then it was to strong. So created a feature that allows a limited usage of the spell without concentration but with a shorter duration
- The ranger is a skill class as well as martial. This class is focused on using skills and overcoming obstacles most classes are unable to or will have difficulty in over coming while also allowing it to shine in combat with its own unique capabilities.
- And lastly, features are shared amongst classes and archetypes. There is no one feature that solely belongs to one class. And sharing features also emphasizes what that class/archetype is capable of doing.
