Homebrew: What gods am I missing?

Thornir Alekeg

Albatross!
I am working on a homebrew setting. The people of the main area worship a pantheon of gods based upon their needs and desires. Right now I have 10 "Home Gods" These are gods openly worshipped They are:

God of the Hearth
God of Wealth
God of the Heart (love, compassion etc.)
God of Learning
God of Justice & Reprisal (Also covers practical jokes)
God of Battle (any kind of challenge falls to him including sporting events)
God of Health
God of Agriculture
God of Art
God of Travel

In addition there are three "Hidden Gods" These are gods not openly worshipped. Mostly people just pray to them when they need them, but would otherwise forget about them. They have their dedicated followers, but those followers are usually not very open about the worship. The Hidden Gods are:

God of Death
God of Lies
God of Pain

Does anyone have any suggestions for other gods I should include?

I'm trying to keep it pg here, but if wer're talking about needs and desires the basic function of human beings is to procreate. So I'd say a god of procreation.

Wild Woman of the Forest - Queen of the Animals - Goddess of Archers
or something natural. What do you want to do for druids?

How about a God of Law?

Going through each of the alignments, do you have a representative for each?

Finally - are you going to include Demon Princes, Arch-Devils, Slaad Princes, etc? If so, you might want to consider giving these creatures a sphere of influence (so the Arch-Devil Mammon becomes the God of Greed) and some measure of divine status.

Also - the monster books contain descriptions of various creatures of the outer planes. You might want to consider a patron for each. For example - a fire elf with music ability (Firre?) - I would think that such creatures might have a patron - perhaps a god of fire and music with a matching alignment.

Notes: There are a number of duplicate portfolios – not all deities are worshipped in all areas, so two different cultures may worship different deities of healing, fertility, and so on.

Deities and portfolios are listed in roughly descending order of power/divine rank by alignment – the god of the sky and the goddess of storms are both greater deities while the god of oratory and the goddess of poison are both demigods.

Greater and intermediate deities tend to be those whom were around when the multiverse was created – demigods are typically ascended mortals.

Finally, the ‘prime material’ is home to numerous quasi-deities, usually associated with some feature of the world, such as the Godking of the Golden City, whose ‘portfolio’ is the city of Dahab.

Let's see...

My world has the God of Boredom, Madness, and Outer Space. He's either called "The Dreamer out of Time", "The Mat", or --rarely-- "Mathew Aaron Dhalberg".

You're missing one of those.

I also have "Shialla, The Servant in the Shadows", a former cocktail waitress who's now the patroness of caves and other dark places where people hide. And "The Smoldering Whore of Ur-Imbra, Goddess of the Abandonning and the Abandonned". And... well nevermind.

My point being... stop being so utilitarian about your game religions. Or else they sound too designed. Don't always approach myth-creation from "Well, there should be a god of that. Try free-associating for a while until you arrive, giggling at "There's a god of that?!".

Remember that real world religions are full of nuttiness, personality and verve.
