D&D 4E Houseruling 4E diagonal movement?

Movement in combat is abstract, as are d20 rolls. No longer does movement constitute true distance, nor does a single d20 die roll reflect one sword swing/black of magic.

I use 1-1-1 for simplicity.

My group has been using the 1-2-1-2 rule since KotS, and we have no problem with it. But we only use it for movement, not for determining ranges and sizes of effects. This system works fine for us, but maybe we're all crazy.

our solution

we got rid of gridded movement a long time ago and instead use the warhammer ruler system. Since 5 ft is 1 inch for miniatures (28 to 32 mm), we just read everything as inches, and use tape measures, and foot sticks to measure movement in any direction we wish...

2-1-1-1(...) has been my favorite since I saw someone here suggest it.

It's easy, and it works out to about sqrt(2) with reasonable accuracy if you tend to move ~6 squares per action.

An idea I had when 4e first came out to treat any blasts and area effects so that corners have cover.

So a blast 3 (thunderwave) would have cover at the X's. You could switch it up so blasts have cover on the corners closest to you, and area effects use the above "template" if you wanted to emulate cones more.

Still can do 1-2-1-2, but makes it so you don't have to funky measuring for stuff, or randomly house rule every single power.

/shrug - I think you could just rule it back and be fine though, maybe leave some of it up to DM calls when it makes sense.
