How do "Close: Blast" effects work?

For example, the Wizard in KotS has Burning Hands which is Close: Blast 5

The way I am reading it, you target an adjecent square and then everything within 5 squares of that gets nailed EXCEPT for the origin square.

That seems a bit strange and awkward, and if I am reading it right, is similar to Burst which sounds the same.

Or is it that you pick the origin point for the blast and it spreads out in a 5x5 square in a direction of your choosing (which makes more sense for both burning hands and the dragonborn breath weapon)

IE you target your own square as the origin point, and decide that a 5x5 block of area in front of you gets nailed for the Blast.

Which is the right way to work this "blasted" thing.

I MADE A PUNNY!

Blast 5 is an arena of 5x5 squares, where one of the sides is adjacent to the caster.
for example:

xxxxxxxxxx
xxxbbbbbx
xxxbbbbbx
xxcbbbbbx
xxxbbbbbx
xxxbbbbbx
xxxxxxxxxx

x = nothing
b = blast
c = caster

Can you do diamond shapes with a blast?

e.g.:
Code:
....b.....
...bbb....
..bbbbb...
.bbbbbbb..
bbbbbbbbb.
.bbbbbbb..
.@bbbbb...
...bbb....
....b.....

b = blast
. = floor
@ = caster

Ah, of course, that makes sense when you think of it in 'square circles' mindset (which I've already accepted and grokked). Thanks.
