How do Rogues and Rangers hide during combat?

How would rogues and rangers be able to hide during combat without some kind of special ability such as "hide in plain sight"?

I'd oppose the Bluff with Sense Motive, followed by Hide opposed by Spot in subsequent rounds. (assuming the Bluff was successful).

But still you need at least 1/2 concealment to hide.
In the book Song&Silence (WotC) are rules given for making one ranged attack within 30ft. and hiding again after the attack.
Maybe this material is off any use for you. In either case it is pretty tough to vanish in plain sight without magical aid. You should consider of buying an Invis Ring or taking some levels as an assassin to get some real powerful spells like improved invis.

Another good tactic is to stay in the back and slink in while the enemy is occupied by the rest of the party.

From my understangind, it seems as if the rogue in question was sneaking and hiding during combat.

I was wondering if it was realistically possible to use the move silently and hide skill during combat.

depending on terain it could be very easy. all you have to do is get out of sight. With boots of cheat your normal move can be 60', in many terains 60' easily gets you out of sight.
