How do you build a tile based rpg in the modern age?

I like tile based rpgs.

If I had the skills, I'd build one.

So I'm asking.

If you were to build a tile based rpg, what would you build?

What is your favorite tile based rpg?

What lessons can be learned from the past?

Is it even possible to build one that would be commercially viable and if so how?

My favorite? Ultima IV for story, V for quality of life.

There's a few being made these days, more in an artisanal mode than in any expectation of making big bucks:

Used to love Ultima back in the day.

Following my own muse, I’d probably do some kind of sci-fi/sci-fant post apocalyptic game. Or maybe a planetary colonization or first contact thing.

It might be cool to do a pirate or pulp hero thing, too.

If I wanted to milk a franchise, I’d tie in to The Walking Dead. 😎

It's very much tile based, but its rogue-like base might disqualify it for this thread, but I'd like to enter 'Tales of May'Eyal' into the contest. It's one of the best rogues I ever played, actively developed, has hours upon hours of replay value.

And yes, Shining Force, absolutely.
