D&D General How do you deal with long breaks in your campaign?

Good time to have a email conversation about how the game is going. A month off to not get Covid is a small price to pay.

If some of you want to meet up anyways, you could play a boardgame or watch a movie or something. There's value in meeting anyways to keep up the habit, but I agree a month shouldn't be a problem.

Working on a Campaign
(from Working on a Song, by Todd Snider, very little had to be changed to make it fit DM world-building angst)

[Verse 1]
My first day of worldbuilding didn't seem like much of one
Drinking 'til I'd fallen asleep out in the sun
Working on a campaign I guess I'm still working on
It's called "Where Will the Party Go Now That They’re Gone?"

[Verse 2]
When that idea first came to me I was only twenty-two
At twenty-five I'd realized it was all that I could do
To make it to the end, but then again, I always knew
If I never got it finished I could die trying to

[Verse 3]
Last night I thought I had it right here in my hotel
Faded out the further asleep that I fell
When I woke up this morning I was more than twice my age
And I had left myself this note here on another empty page

[Verse 4]
"Where Will the Party Go Now That They’re Gone?"
They said "Maybe you're been chasing a campaign too long
It's turned into a campaign about a campaign you're working on
I mean it's gone, man, come on, let it go"

[Verse 5]
But you know, giving up a dream is just like making one come true
It's easy to sit around talking about, it's harder to go out and do
But for this one last question, I'll give up on this campaign
"Where Will the Party Go Now That They’re Gone?"

[Outro]
Now that they’re gone
Now that they’re gone
Where will they go now that they’re gone?
A DM's Lament

It happened to take break during some of our campaigns because we couldn't be togheter for various reasons. I prefer to say taking a hiatus as for me taking a break is during session loll I took a hiatus when my daughter was born. Another when we lost some players. One time because our friend was fed up and we paused.

The most recent pandemic also forced a pause in my home game, being gathering-limited by authorities and due to national curfew.

But i have online play that fortunatly, is never a problem so i can keep gaming!

Nothing wrong with a break, and the reason really doesn't matter. I've ran multiple games (via email and pbp) where I would take the summer off. At the end of the summer, players would begin emailing and we would "kick-off" the next round of adventures, usually over Labor Day weekend.
Since the pandemic, I've had a few opportunities to play face-to-face. I passed on all of them until last July when I ran a one-shot with a couple of friends and their regular gaming group. The next week I tested positive for COVID, and gave it to my wife and son. No fun...at all. So...for now, I only game online...and even then, you sometimes need a break to just unplug and relax.
Good luck with your break and good gaming!
