How do you explain RPGs to others?

I used to have a whole spiel about the adult play-pretend/cops & robbers/collaborative storytelling thing. But these days I just tell people that I get together with a bunch of people to worship satan and kill things in some steam tunnels. I find it to elicit a more entertaining reaction.

I usually start with saying it's like the game you used to play where one person starts to tell a story, leaves it off at an exciting part, and the next person in the circle picks it up. The difference is instead of each having one part of the story, you each have one character in the story.
I've also compared it to making up a television show, an episode a week. This one works with people who want to know how you "win." Just like a TV show, no one wins. It ends when the characters have resolved the basic premise of the show. (at least good shows do that.

It also seems to be easier to explain if I explain my Play by Post game first. Then I can say "You can also just all get together and do it sitting around a table. You don't get a written version of what you created, but it's basically the same."

kid1: so i says to the GM you can't do that.
kid2: did he freak?
kid1: No way, he was like, all in tears and stuff.
kid2: kewl.
kid1: and then i told him i was taking this new power i found in the Complete Book of Elf pr0n.
kid2: yeah, i wanted to take that power. but it didn't fit my 100th lvl concept.
diaglo throws up.

I usually tell people I sit around a table and pretend to be an elf... then my character dies, I shout NOOOO NOT BLACKLEAF! Then my Dungon Master calls me weak and kicks me out of his house... I go home and kill myself after surrounding myself in dungons and dragons miniatures arranged to form a pentagram in hopes of ressurecting my character... Then people usually leave me alone and let me go back to whatever it was I was doing.
