I keep it to myself around coworkers and acquaintances.
I work in a pretty conservative office environment where everyone also knows everyone's business .... so I tend to keep my gaming affiliations private. I love poker so I can often substitute the word 'game session' for 'played poker' if it comes down to it.
A recent example highlighted why its good not to flaunt too much about your geeky side. I was commenting about how I'm obsessed with the Iron Man movie and 'recently' (as in 2-3 years ago) started buying certain comics again ..... well it was a passing conversation, but some random and older coworker who was well-removed from the original conversation said he'd heard 'I still read comics.' It came off like I was an idiot or immature ... and I know revealing myself as a hardcore GAMER would be ten times more of a stigma.
What's really ironic though is the fact that there is no stigma for certain video games. Mass Effect-style RPGs, FPS games, sports games, even guitar hero, etc. WoW's stigmatized a little, but not like D&D.
Around non-work types that I know well ... I'm pretty open about it. But I still hide the gaming books when I bring a new girl back to the apartment.
Anyway, based on past periods of my life of being an open gamer, I know that some stigmas never die.
AT LEAST the stigma that we are all pagan devil worshipers has largely fallen by the wayside. That was a big deal in the early 90's when I first started gaming in middle school.
