We do everything randomly.
Stats (4d6, drop low) and hit points included (except max at 1st level).
That way, we always have at least one PC to pick on. ;)
Seriously though, I would actually prefer point buy and average hit points but I am the only one in my group who feels that way.
Probably because I'm usually the guy whose character winds up being the 5th level fighter with 30 hit points and a STR of 15 while the other guy's 5th level cleric has 36 hit points and a STR of 16 (his third highest stat, of course).
Oh, well
Of course, I get even by making the most interesting and memorable characters and having the most fun. So there! :D

Norfleet:
"It works as follows:
At every level-up, a character's hitpoints are completely rerolled.
If the new total exceeds the character's previous max HP, his new max HP becomes this total.

Otherwise, he gains 1 hp."

Gee that's a good system. Almost identical to the system that I presented earlier....

Here's an idea for those of you who don't like the randomness of straight rolling and who don't mind a system that plays up the difference in hit dice sizes.

d4: 2+1d2
d6: 3+1d3
d8: 4+1d4
d10: 5+1d5
d12: 6+1d6

This is not what I use (I mentioned my system on p.1 of this thread), but reading some of the other suggestions made me come up with this.

What I like about it, is that it eliminates the 'suckyness' risk factor of random rolling, while still letting people roll their normal hit die (they just have to divide their roll by two).

yessss roll the dice! why? because it's fun....that said, ones a rerolled in our group, and our DM keeps track of the rolls, so if the mainfighter throws a 2 and a 3 four times in a row, he probably gives him a break. We're all happy about it and it doesn't give any problems

Personally if I were DM I would keep track of the rolls, but 1's would not necesarrily get a re-roll......but I'm not so.....

In our group, after first level, you can roll any number of dice up to or equal to your level, and take the average of the # dice. You don't have to roll more than one die, as more dice mean that you have a greater chance of being somewhere closer to the average.

Example (using fighter):

1st level: max hp
2nd level: up to 2d10/# of dice rolled
3rd level: up to 3d10/# of dice rolled
4th level: up to 4d10/# of dice rolled
5th level: up to 5d10/#of dice rolled

Most of us usually roll 1 die until we end up with a 1 or 2, then start rolling more dice to try and keep from falling behind the average based on our level. But there are a few who insist on keeping with that 1 die roll every time.
