D&D 5E (2014) How do you run a game in Ravnica?

Yeah. I've offered Ravnica as an option several times but only 1-2 mtg players were keen.

Unless players own a setting book its hard.
With any setting that is unfamiliar, you have to sell it to the players with an elevator pitch to tell them why it's cool. Just because a setting has appeared in other media it still needs the DM to sell why its cool in D&D.

I don't really do that. I give them a list of 5 with a small what's so good.
Since I'm not to worried what they pick I'm not actively pushing any of them.

Used to. These days I normally ask more how they're leaning then do pitch off what what to do. After Norse game wasn't panning out.

If I'm not excited about a campaign idea myself, I can't expect players to be excited about it. I might be excited about two or three ideas at once, but five is more like "you choose, I don't care".

When it comes to setting books, if I'm not already excited by the idea, I don't buy them.

I liked Ravnica alot when I played MtG.
And yeah I thought i could do Norse well. I was wrong.

Player gave me advice. Do what you're passionate about.

One thing to consider: some parts of Ravnica are completely ruined. So if you want a simple monster bashing game free of guild politics you could just send your PCs out into the ruins to kill monsters and recover loot.

Hay, you could do Escape From New York!

Why bother doing that in Ravnica?

You can sure. Should you???

True, but a ruined urban landscape is at least cosmetically different from the usual D&D landscape, and the players get their guild special abilities to play with. And you can trot out the large selection of Ravnica themed monsters that are in the book.

Not all D&D players want plots. Some just want to fight monsters and steal their stuff.

Yeah, and now it's making me look at it with a Shadowrun eye.

so naturally, we need to add the greatest dragon in all of fiction.
